STTN??? What's that?

Apple is 5 months old now and I feel like we aren't making much progress getting her to sttn, HELP!

She goes to bed around 8 pm each night and has a 6oz bottle before bed.  She wakes 3-5 times during the night and will not go back to sleep without a bottle, usually 4oz at a time, 12-20oz overnight.

We've let her try to calm down on her own but she keeps crying, we've tried different pacifiers but she doesn't like any of them, I try to rock her back to sleep in her cradle but she cries until I give her a bottle.  I have also tried decreasing the amount of formula in each bottle but she isn't fooled and cries for more.  I have tried feeding her more to keep her  full through the night but she will only take 4oz then fall asleep.

What has worked for you?  I was spoiled with A, she started sttn on her own at 2 months so I don't know what to do in this situation.

Re: STTN??? What's that?

  • I am of no help since Gray ate overnight until 11m and I finally had to wean him by decreasing the amount in the bottle 1oz at a time over the course of a few weeks (and then did water - which did not interest him at all!)

But he still woke every night until he was 3.5y (but I never fed him!)

Perhaps decreasing the amount you give her will help. But in any case, I am sorry. Sleep deprivation SUCKS.

  • At almost 8 mo we still feed once/night around 30% of the time (maybe more; I might be in denial). At 5 mo we were feeding 2x/night (12 or 1 and 3 or 4 or so. They're up for the day between 6 and 7).

12-20 overnight seems like a lot though. how much does she eat during the day?

I would give my right leg for her to wake only twice a night!  She usually eats around 30oz during the day (36ish with the bedtime bottle) and eats one Gerber.

  • 42/48-50/56 oz is a LOT. Have you mentioned this to the pedi?

Our girls only eat 26-32ish (EBM), so I'm not super up on this, but I thought 40 was the "limit" for some reason.

  • How big is she? When are you doing the solids--right before bed? Have you experimented with adding in another solid meal a day? She may just still need the food.

Lex nursed A TON at night until she was 9+ months old and we transitioned to the crib--our doctor didn't want her sleeping through the night until she was about 7 months. She has a high burn rate and needed the calories. She STTN now.

Hope you get some sleep soon!

She is 17lb, 25".  I usually do the solids around 10am and am thinking about doing a second solid feeding in the evening.

Our pedi told us that as well - and they have the confounding issue of more accute pain when teething.  So, with all of that, we just rolled with the punches.  RB didnt STTN until 12 months old and now she's the most awesome sleeper ever.  Still waiting for Daisy to STTN...

No drug exposure...  She has been teething (her second bottom tooth came through yesterday) but this seems like a normal baby not sttn.who.I.would.really.like.to.sttn thing.

BTW Erat, what is a dream feed?

  • I generally recommend increasing daytime feeds (total oz and/or solids) to help off-set current night time caloric needs. Then gradually decrease night time quantities, like 2brides mentioned. Try giving the minimal possible to get her to calm and focusing on other soothing methods. "Dream feeds" are feeding a sleepy/sleeping baby just before bed/just before they would normally waking, in an effort to keep them full and from rousing completely. Where is she sleeping in relation to you?

She is now sleeping in her cradle about 2 feet away from my side of the bed.
