WDYT?

I posted last night about putting cereal in DDs bottle and ended up not doing that.  The chunky monkey definitely does not need anymore chunk.  But I am wondering about adding water to a bottle of BM.  I figure maybe if I add more and more water eventually it will just be water and she won't feel like waking up to get a bottle of water.  Thoughts?

Re: WDYT?

  • You need to discuss this with your pedi.  I would not add anything (including water) to my BM without talking to her about it first.  Has your pedi expressed concern over her weight?  Otherwise I see no need to do anything other than BF (or offer BM) during the night.

  • The pedi suggested a sippy cup of water when she wakes up hungry.  My child will not drink water out of a sippy cup.

  • I agree with the PP, I wouldn't change anything like that until you talk to your pedi.

I stopped feeding Mason during the night gradually.  It basically started when I stopped BFing at night so it was a little easier to end it.  I began going in and consoling him when he cried instead of feeding him.  It was rough at first, but he doesn't eat at night anymore!! Well, occasionally he takes a few ounces but I don't offer it unless he is completely inconsolable.

  • wait why were you thinking of adding cereal to her bottle? Is she waking often to nurse at night? Is she not satisfied with just bm?  Maybe try cereal and puree's during the day to fill her up more if she is still hungry.  Either that or maybe a bottle of formula before bed. I hear the formula lasts a little longer than bm, but like I said just hearsay.
  • On a good night, she is up every 2 hours, and eats about 4 of those times.  I would love to feed her cereal and baby food during the day but she is boycotting eating and force feeding her baby food does not end well.  I try to just hold her or rub her back to sleep at night but it generally results in about 45 minutes of crying and I can't keep doing that.

  • my dd hated purees and cereal, hated them.  she would refuse to open her mouth.  So I started giving her chunky versions.  Like mashed real banana chunks with a tad of bm. smooshed peas, avacado...really soft foods...

We went through several night wakings until 6 months the pedi said she was waking out of habit and that I should stop feeding her every time.  most nights I gave in and nursed anyway b/c it was easiest and fastest.  At 8 months something just clicked and she started STTN.  It was a long awaited road!
