How long on Infant Car Seat? (probably a 2+ mom ?)

I know there are weight and length limits for when you technically have to switch, but I just wondered when it becomes more logistically difficult to try and use the infant car seat.  I was thinking of getting a second base for DH's car, but if it becomes cumbersome to use this seat at 6 months, it's not really worth the cost.  If we can use for up to a year (our guy is little, so I think he will definitely fit in it height and weight-wise), then it would be worth the investment.  Anyone with any advice/experience on this?

  • DS didn't outgrow it until after a year but at 5 to 6 months when he could tart sitting up in a cart we just started leaving the car seat in the car and took him in and out of it instead of carrying the bucket. I worked and DH did daycare drop off  so we both had bases but now that I don't DH doesn't have a base.  I hope that makes sense!

  • It depends on the kid and the seat, of course.  We switched DD to a rear-facing convertible seat at about 4 months.  She was too big and uncomfortable in the infant seat (we had a Maxi Cosi seat for her).  DS is bigger than she was but so is his seat (Chicco KeyFit 30) so we will see.

  • We moved DD to a conv car seat at about 10 months. She was long but petite.

  • Both my boys moved at a year old. I was ready to turn them around. It's so much easier when they're not rear facing. ( this was before the rec. To leave them rear facing )

  • I left DS1 in his infant carrier until 12 mos. He didn't reach the height limit until his 15mo appt. I liked that it's reclined since he's a car sleeper and I liked the sun visor lol. After he was able to sit up around 5 mos, I stopped carrying the seat, I'd just leave it in the car.

  • I am a nanny and most of my kids were in it until just about one year.  It was heavy to carry, so I'd often take them out of it rather than carry it.  Especially once they could walk holding hands.

  • DD1 was in it until about 10 months. She was always petite, so size wasn't an issue and she could've used it longer. In fact, our Maxi Cosi infant seat has s 22lb weight limit, and my 20-month DD is only 22.5 lbs!  I stopped carrying her around in it at about 5/6 months...it was easier to put her in a cart or directly into the stroller. Once she could sit up and pull up and such, she was really uncooperative about being restricted anyway.

DD2 is much longer...I'm thinking we will have to move her sooner. We will get another Britax Boulevard for her, since DD1 is still in hers and still RF.
