DH's Health Insurance

DH is actively looking for another job right now. I'm on his health insurance, and I'm concerned about what will happen if he does end up changing jobs, which also means a change in health insurance. Has anyone else been through this in the middle of a pregnancy? Finding another job is kind of essential right now since he's working a strange swing shift schedule on 12-hour shifts. Unfortunately, he's also salary, which means he often works more hours than he's scheduled for. This isn't conducive to a family life.

Re: DH's Health Insurance

  • We switched insurances when I was 7 months pregnant with DD. I think so long as it's through an employer, they can't deny your pre-existing condition of pregnancy.

  • My employer was changing insurance companies when I was pg last time.  If I went a few days late it would have effected me.  I talked to hr and they said that there was paperwork I could fill out that would let me keep using the same ob even if she wasn't covered by the new insurance.  I ended up delivering early so it was a none issue.

  • Thanks to Obama care you don't have to worry. Insurance companies are no longer allowed to not cover pre-existing conditions. You will still be covered. My husband and I will also be switching Insurances mid pregnancy and I talked to my mother about this who is licensed to sell insurance and works for a national insurance company.
  • I think it would depend on the company he gets a job with.  Some companies have a "trial" period and insurance doesn't kick in for a couple months.  My company has a 90 day period for new hires.  But you might be able to carry over your old insurance with COBRA.

  • You should have an issue with the new insurance covering your pregnancy as long as you do not have a gap in coverage. If your husband finds a new job but their insurance doesn't start for a couple of months you would want to purchase Cobra from the job he is leaving. Cobra can be expensive, but it is worth it to not have a time period that you are not covered.

I wouldn't count on Obama Care.  The supreme court healthcare ruling is supposed to be delivered in June, and from what I've read, it's unlikely that the rest of the bill would be spared if the individual mandate is decided to be unconstitutional.  When this would go into effect, I don't know, but I was mildly freaking out because we'll be moving and switching insurances in August.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that if there's less than a 30 day lapse in coverage between employee sponsored health plans, then they will cover the "pre-exisiting condition."

  • This is all good info. Thanks, ladies!

This.  Just FYI, pregnancy coverage cannot be denied as a pre-existing condition.  (Obviously, however, if you have a gap with no insurance at all, you don't have pg coverage either!)
