DH & work after baby

How much time, if any, are your DH's planning on taking off once the baby is born? And I guess I am speaking to those DH's that can't work from home and don't have any sort of paternity leave available to them. DH will have 2 weeks vaca come June and I was trying to plan a vaca for us this summer. It didn't hit me until today that he will want to be home for at least a week after the baby is born, possibly longer.

Re: DH & work after baby

  • We kind of have an opposite situation. I'll be in graduate school, so I can't take barely any maternity leave (1 week-2 weeks max).  He'll be SAHD, then looking for a job once baby is old enough for daycare.

  • Well DH will be deploying before October but he should be allowed a 2wk paternity leave.  It just may not be right after the baby is born.  Hopefully it's in the first month though.

After DD was born DH wasn't working but was in school full time.  He missed classes when I was in the hospital but that was it.

Currently going through our second deployment. Can't wait for Zoe to meet her daddy!

  • It will probably just be 1 or 2 weeks depending on how much vacation time he has built up by then.  He used to have a ton of vacation time and then they changed the policy at his work so they have to zero out their vacation time each year and making it take a lot longer to build up again.  Right now he has 0 days.

  • Just a week.  We already had a vacation planned in April that he is taking time off for, and then needs time for around the holidays.   I'm sure I'll have family that will come down after to help as well.

  • My DH took off 5 business days after DD was born.  I had her on a Sunday, he took that M-F off work, then the weekend, and he was back at work the following Monday.

That's the plan again this time around, he's the Boss-Man and they don't function well when he's not there.

  • He has 4 weeks of vacation and has Christmas Eve Day till Jan 3 rd off. So, I'm hoping he will be home 2-3 weeks off then use some of his left over time for Thanksgiving to visit family.

I'm thinking about possibly leaving for 4 months then going back part time. We will be single parents who will be married since I'll be working weekends while he works during the week to cut out child care. I'm a nurse and work 3 days/12 hr shifts ...I would just be handing my third day paycheck to a nanny so I might as well stay home.

  • DH will take the whole week the baby is born (probably 4 days, since my repeat c/s will likely be on a Tuesday), and possibly a few days the following week.  When DS was born, he only took the week of the birth, and that 2nd week would've been really nice to have him home, so I'm hoping he'll take at least 2-3 days the following week.  We have to see how many days he has accumulated, though, since I'll use all my days on maternity leave & we'll need to make sure he has days left in case one or both kids end up getting sick.

  • DH and I were just talking about this today.  He has to find out if he gets any Paternity leave.  If not he has 3 weeks of Vacation that he will split up.  My only problem with him using vacation time is there is not way to plan when he will need to take off until after I deliver.

  • H will take a week off from work. He's salary so he can be in and out of the office, leave early as he pleases to help out, so more than that isn't necessary. We want to save some time for the holidays too, since we'll be doing a lot of traveling to see family, etc.

  • We are planning for my H to take off a week after LO arrives. Probably 2 wks if I were to have to have a c/s. He's an Electrician so his job is flexible.

  • DH won't have a ton of vacation accumulated by then, so probably just 1 week. He does work close by and will come home for lunch everyday while I'm on maternity leave so that should help a tiny bit. If I have to have a c/s we might be able to swing 2 weeks or something, but I'd rather him save that time for the holidays and whatnot.

  • He'll take 2 weeks off.   He could work at home afterwards if needs be.

  • I will be home for 3 months, my husband will use some of his vacation. I'm rooting for 3-4 weeks, he only wants to use 1 week. I think he'll change his mind once he sees him/her.

  • At least one full week after the baby. If I have the baby on a Thursday or Friday, he will take those days off vacation in addition to the following week. He gets two weeks paid paternity leave so he is planning on using one right after the baby and one my first week back at work.

  • I am pushing hard for three weeks. Two weeks wasn't long enough before.

  • DH has 3 weeks of paternity leave, but will propbably only take 1 week of it.  He is an attorney so it will depend on how busy his schedule is and if he has court that month.  I am hoping my mom or MIL will help me out for a week after he goes back.

  • DH will only be able to take a week off because of when the baby is going to be born it isn't a good time for him to be off.

  • At this point he's planning on take one week of vaca and working from home for 1 week, so 2 weeks total. I wish he would take more (he gets 6 weeks vaca!) but he'll need some for the holidays also I guess. I think my Mom is going to come and stay for a few weeks too, maybe before the nanny starts.

  • He took off 2 weeks after DD was born and will probably do the same this time. I honestly think he was ready to go back after 2 weeks last time. lol

  • He took 2 weeks with DD. I am hoping he can take at least 3 weeks this time. I'm nervous about the transition from 1 to 3.

  • I will be transitioning to a full time SAHM(finally!!!!) once the baby is born, so I will have an endless maternity leave. DH will have just gotten his Green Card and a job if all goes well, so he will have no vacation time and will probably not be able to take off his new job. We have no worries about that though!!!

  • Mine is going to do a week.
  • H works at home. Last time, his employer arranged it so that he didn't actually have any work to do the week after DD was born, and he had small projects for a few weeks after that so he was around for awhile.

    I am a SAHM.

    I LOVE our arrangement.

  • DH is self employed as a contractor, so if he doesnt work he doesnt make money. When DS was born I had him on a Thursday and DH went to work on Saturday to catch up on the days he missed at that job so he could stay on schedule. DS was also two weeks early, so his schedule was a little tighter than it should have been. This time we will see how his schedule looks, it would be nice to have him home for a couple days.

DH needs knee surgery and I am trying to talk him into doing it right after the baby is born so I can be home and take care of him. It would work out good because he could sit and hold the baby, or sit and watch movies with ds to make sure he gets lots of attention. My mom thinks I am crazy, but I think it would be perfect.
