High-Risk Pregnancy

underweight high-risk

hi everyone. i went to my local health department at 7 1/2 weeks pregnant and they told me i am high-risk. I believe it is simply because of my weight, as my pre-pregnancy weight was only 94 pounds. I have not had any morning sickness, however i did have a stomach bug around 6 weeks that caused me to lose about 6 pounds over a 3 day period. I am nearly 12 weeks now and have gotten back up to my 94 pounds and am eating constantly. I feel as if my weight will not be a huge issue, but i was wondering if anyone else is in this category for the same reasons as me?

How tall are you?  If you're 5"0' then your weight is no biggie.  If you're 5'8", then it may be an issue.  If you have trouble putting on weight, your baby may have trouble putting on weight.  If you're hyperthyroid, which can cause weight loss and trouble maintaining weight, then that will need to be treated.  Depending on your personal situation, you may just require a medication or extra ultrasounds, stuff like that.  Some ob's might call you high risk, but others would not-- it all depends on the situation.

I am 5'4". My ob said my bmi is 16.1 and they want me to gain anywhere from 35-40 pounds. I have always been a smaller girl, with my top weight being 104 pounds but I have had my thyroid and everything else tested and everything has always been fine. I'm sure if there is any issues with gaining weight during my pregnancy that my ob will be able to help. I just wanted to know if there was anyone else out there withthe same problems.

Some people have high metabolisms and they just are smaller! I don't think you're really high risk just because of your weight. Usually you would have a disease or a syndrome or something that is chronic vs. only being a smaller person. I had a friend that could eat a restaurant out of food and she wouldn't gain a pound. She was naturally a stick like her dad. She only gained like 15lbs during her pregnancies and her babies were perfect! She was high risk, but she has pre-term labor at 4 months into her pregnancy. Other than that, she was in perfect health.

I didn't put on any weight until the 3rd trimester started...and lost 5 pounds in the first and second trimesters from all the morning sickness. My doctors never said anything about it being high-risk though. She just said now I need to start working on gaining some weight! I've only put on 19 pounds throughout this whole pregnancy, I'm 38 weeks along (haven't had ANY appetite and have to force myself to eat) so I wouldn't worry about it too much if I were you. I would just keep up the hard work at putting on those lovely pounds and inches (: 25-35 pounds is what they want you to gain if you're at a normal body weight pre-pregnancy, but if you are underweight you need to gain more, so just keep that in mind!

HI!  I am lurking, but I wanted to share:

I am 5 ft and have a small frame. I weighed 92 lbs pre-preg, and was very sick during my first tri... I got down to 86 lbs, and was considered high risk.

However, after I got back up to 92 ( at 14 wks), I had no complications during my entire pregnancy and they removed my high-risk status at 20 wks, but still monitored me carefully to make sure the baby was growing correctly.   I had my baby at 38 wks, 4 days.  I weighed 111 lbs the day I had him, and he weighed 6 lbs 9 oz.  And the doctors said we were both perfectly healthy.

Hopefully, you will have an problem-free pregnancy too!!  :)

Thanks for sharing! It's definitely reassuring to know that things worked out well for you. Did u end up having to have a cs due to your size? That's another main concern of mine. I would REALLY like to deliver naturally, but my size is a concern for me.

I was induced and had a vaginal birth, but it was forceps assisted.  I was never told that I needed a c-section.

I hope that everything works out perfectly for you! :)
