XP: Pointing with whole hand

My DS has just started what I *think* is pointing. Only he does it with his whole hand. Does that come before using the index finger? Do any of your babies "point" with the whole hand rather than the pointer finger? Just wondering if this is considered pointing or just reaching?

    DD is a whole hand girl and I'm certain it's pointing.  She does it a lot when I'm holding her on the couch and she wants something from the end table.  Or when someone new walks into the room and she's excited, she'll "point" to them.

    I never thought of it as pointing since it's the whole hand. I think DS is doing that. I have to pay attention, so OP may be right maybe first is whole hand then pointer finger.
