What are peoples thoughts on NT Scan?

I was offered to have this done in a few weeks and I am wondering what people think of it!? It wont change my outcome as I dont believe in termination of pregnancy but part of me thinks it would be really nice to "just know"

what are your thoughts?

Re: What are peoples thoughts on NT Scan?

  • I had it done and don't regret a thing. BUT my insurance did cover it and I'm still going to get a Quad test done to double check. However only you can answer this and decide if it's necessary. :) GL

  • I had mine yesterday..it made me feel horrible. I am soo extremely worried now that I can't stop thinking about my baby. I didn't even expect to have to have it.

I'm 18 years old and perfectly healthy but my baby's nuchal fold measured 5 mm which is very thick...and they took my blood as well to try to see what my chances are. I'm betting they'll be 1:50 or greater chances. But I really hope the blood work comes back.

It's a pretty good tool to determine the risks though, I say go for it. People say there are a lot of false positives but I don't really believe that seeing as it's just telling you your chances and not for sure.

I will not terminate my pregnancy but also don't know if I will get an amnio or not.  I will probably just wait and see. I'm just hoping if it is down syndrome, there are no heart problems.

But it's a personal choice. Get it if you want. It might ease your fears..or make them worse.

Our little one is due October 15th, 2012! (: Pregnancy Ticker

  • It's a very personal choice, but here are my views on it.

While my husband and I would not change our mind about the pregnancy we feel it would be very helpful to know in advance if our chances were high for downs, heart issues, etc. As scary is it is to hear you may have a chance of x,y,z...I'd much rather have 6-7 months to prepare for the worst case senario and end up with a happy outcome or at least be prepped for it. Rather than not testing and getting the desvistating news on delivery day with no time to prepare emotionally or as far as special medical care, etc.

We have had one with both pregnancies and did genetic screening this time due to some other issue we discovered after a loss late last year. We are very happy with our choices.

  • I live in Canada and we don't have to pay for it. So we are doing it just to be safe. Not that it's going to change anything, this is our first and we want to be safe.

  • My insurance covered it, and even though my husband and I were very clear going in that we wouldn't change anything regardless what we found out, it was interesting. The genetic counseling part was educational because I found out how a specific disease that a cousin of mine has could potentially route its way through my family. Best part was I got another look at our LO.

  • I opted out when I scheduled my next appt. But now that I hear you get an u/s I want to do it. I haven't seen our LO yet and desperately want to. Is it accurate that you get an u/s with this test? What else goes on? You would think I would remember from last pregnancy but  not even sure we had one.H

  • Insurance covers it 100% for me. I don't think we would terminate unless God forbid the baby couldn't survive at all or something, but it's nice reassurance that things are going pretty well.

Yes, it's a high-quality u/s and b/w that you do at home (a finger prick) and mail it in. You are probably too late though, there are very specific dates for the b/w and u/s and it all has to be done by week 13 or 14. You need to do the b/w between weeks 9-12 and that has to be 2 wks before the appt.

  • It's obviously a very personal choice. Personally, I wouldn't bother, but I'm one of the ones who suffered through a false positive and let me tell you, it was a hard two weeks. It sounds like you get the testing and an ultrasound all at once now? That's a bit different from when i had it (5 years ago) I had the blood work done and got a 1:25 chance. Then I had to wait two weeks for the ultrasound. It turned out that my little guy was perfectly fine. It didn't help that I had a doom and gloom doctor but I promised myself I would never do that again. Good luck!

Unfortunately, you probably won't be able to get one unless your doc can squeeze you in because it has to be done before 13w6d.  To the poster who said you do the blood work at home, that may be accurate in some cases but I believe most people have their blood draw at the lab (I definitely did).

  • My insurance covers it. It's a long sonogram so you get to see a lot of the baby, that's why I did it.

  • I had one, covered by medical plan.  We wouldn't have terminated the pregnancy, this u/s was a great view of the baby it was over 45mins.

And the chances of doing the b/w at home is rare ~ this is the first I have heard of that.  I had to go and get the b/w done a week before the u/s and they had the results ready for me at the u/s place once the u/s was done.

I had mine done at a lab and it was certainly not just a prick, they took 10 vials of blood!  That was my first time having blood drawn though, so it was for more than just the NT Scan.

  • I did it with my first and will do it again with this one. I'm 36 so the older you are the higher the risk. We wouldn't terminate but we would like to prepared if there were going to issues.

If you are going to do this you need to do it soon. Has to be done by 13wks it is a small window. Yes there is and ultrasound. I found it very interesting I was 37 years old when I had mine and everything was fine and they show you things and explain everything in-depth.

  • My insurance covers it so we are doing it. Even though you wont terminate you pregnancy, I think it's stupid to go into a situation and not know what is going on when you had the chance to find out! If something is wrong, you have advance warning of the times ahead, and thus more time to prepare yourself and your family for the jouney that is coming. Also if nothing is wrong then your mind is put to ease!
  • If my insurance covered it, I would do it just to see the baby again. Since my insurance won't cover it, I'm going to skip it. I'm 34. I don't have any family history of the diseases it can detect. I talked to my OB about it and she seemed to think that it wasn't worth it if my insurance won't cover it. She said they should see it at the 18-20 week anatomy scan if something is terribly wrong.  I also asked the perinatal doctor (high risk OB) about it. She said there are more important things to spend my money on right now.  Besides, I tend to be a worrier. If I got a 1 in 80 chance or something like that, I'd spend the rest of my pregnancy worried even though I knew that 79 out of 80 times nothing is wrong even with the results I got.

  • I am a planner, and so I like to have all of the information possible.  We are going to have the baby and love it regardless, but I'd just like to know for my own peace of mind so that I can prepare mentally and emotionally.  Obviously the scans aren't foolproof, but it'll at least give us an idea.

  • I hate when people say that it has a high rate of false positive. It doesn't.

The N/T scan is not diagnostic so it can't give you a false positive. It lets you know if there is an elevated chance that your baby may have an issue. Only the CVS and amnio are diagnostic. The Quad screen (notoriously unreliable) is also not diagnostic.

We opted not to get one. We also opted to not get the Quad. Our naive rationale was that it wouldn't matter no matter what the results were. Then we had our A/S and our DD had 5 soft markers. So, we went from not wanting any tests to having an amnio. Still, we will likely not get an N/T for the next pregnancy although I am probably going to be 36 during my next pregnancy, so that may change.

THIS. There is no such thing as a "false positive" with the NT scan.  It makes me stabby when people say that.

I did have the scan and I would do it again.  I would not continue a pregnancy if there were issues that showed my baby would not live or have major issues if it did.  Flame away.

  • Butting in from 3rd tri but I had one and am glad I got it done! They discovered a low PAP A protein which can cause Pre-E and/or stop growth of the baby. Because they discovered that they now watch my blood pressure more closely amd I have growth u/s's every 4-6 weeks to make sure he is still growing. I say do it, better to be safe than sorry!

Thank you for this. I hate how people on the bump imply you are a monster if you would terminate a pregnancy. There are circumstances where it makes sense and it's a very personal decision. I consider people who go in blind without all the information naive and foolish, personally.

  • I'm opting out only because I am getting a level 2 ultrasound at 20 weeks and I don't want the possibility of a false positive/Downs marker to make me worry for 6 weeks.

My friend had a couple of Down's markers and was horribly worried for weeks until she got her level 2, and everything turned out fine.

Like you, a positive Downs result wouldn't make me terminate, but why worry if you don't need to.

Some people say they'd rather be able to prepare, but IMO you can prepare as much in 20 weeks as you can in 26 or 28 if you have a special needs child.
