International Travel...

Can anyone help me with some suggestions, pointers, ideas, etc...

My son will be 13 months when we travel this summer from Georgia to Ireland.  We actually will be flying from Georgia to Manchester, UK and staying for a day.  Then we'll head from Manchester to Shannon Airport in Ireland.  Then, we've got to get from the airport to Adare (near Limerick) to meet our family who are from the US, but traveling a few days ahead of us.  We've got a house secured for our stay - but all other travel plans haven't been made yet (because we're clueless about how to travel with an infant).  I need as much advice as possible...Ideas, anything.

p.s - the family we are meeting up with in Adare is *not* kid friendly... so we are trying our best to minimize their exposure to our son, so that they're not overwhelmed during their vacation. We want to enjoy our time with him there..while not making others around us suffer.  :)

Re: International Travel...

  • I will be traveling to Mexico with Chase later this week, so if I come back with advice, I'll update this post.  I realize that we're not going to be traveling as far as you, but then, Alaska to Mexico is a fairly long trip.

I was told by our pediatrician to take infant tylenol/advil with us as well as a thermometer.

My SIL's husband is Dutch and they have spent a lot of time in the Netherlands with their boys.  I'm not sure if your son is going to be out of baby food by then, but she did say that the baby food blends there were different than what you can get here, and that she could not find any that were just one food (just carrots, just apples etc.)

We're taking a collapsible high chair that clamps onto the side of a table so that we can use it in the hotel and at restaurants.

  • This is a great website.

She travels mostly in the developing world, but has great infant travel tips.

    The basics:

The baby will need a passport.  I would call the airlines directly for help on arranging air travel with the baby as far as purchasing a seat, a bassinet, etc.

I'm not sure how it works internationally, but also look into baby gear rentals.

  • I'm updating as promised.  Here are a few things that I found useful.

Ergobaby Carrier - We used this on the plane.  Since you can sit down while wearing your baby in this carrier, Chase slept in the carrier and I was able to sleep as well, since I didn't have to worry about dropping him.  We were on a red-eye flight on the way down, and this allowed me to function once we got to Mexico.  We also used the carrier all over Cabo, since the sidewalks can be great in some places, overcrowded in some places and non-existent in some places.  We really only used the stroller when we were going to the grocery store, to carry groceries back to the hotel.

Clamp on travel high chair - We were able to clamp this to the counter in our suite to feed him in the room and we used it in a couple of smaller restaurants that didn't have a high chair.  It's small enough when collapsed that it went in one of the suitcases for travel.

Coconut oil - Chase, DH and I all used this in Mexico.  I took it to use for diaper rash, but we used it on a heat rash that Chase got, friction rash that DH got running in the heat and I used it on a sore nipple from BFing.  (First time I've done this, but it worked better than lanolin for me).  We also used it on dry skin.  I'll never travel without it again.

Dr. Bonners - I used it as a body wash for myself and Chase, to wash off his pacifier when he dropped it in the sand, do wash his clothes in the sink when he got a blowout our first day there, and you can use it for dishes.

The Seattle Airport has a play area for kids to run around in.  We took Chase there to crawl around and burn of some energy between flights.  He loved it!  I'm sure some other airports have things like these too, so they're a good thing to look for.
