Babies: 0 - 3 Months

almost 4 week old not pooping

LO who is BF did not poop yesterday and nothing so far today. He is eating every 3 hours and peeing very well...but no poop. He is also passing lots of gas, so at least something is going on. Should I be concerned? My other 2 kids were champs at pooping when they were newborns.

Re: almost 4 week old not pooping

  • We had this issue at 2 weeks....my dr. wasn't overly concerned.  She went up to a week without going!  They did say we could try a formula bottle once a day to see if that would help, and it did seem to help some.  I've also read that sometimes breast fed babies use all the nutrients that they are getting and don't have much waste.  The dr. said if she seemed overly fussy or wasn't eating/sleeping well to call again.  Now she is back to going daily or twice a day!  Good luck!

  • After about 5 days, then I would get concerned. DS was pooping once a week for a while, and it was awful that one day of the week!

  • It's normal.  DS is pooping every 2-3 days now, and I'm not concerned.  Be prepared for a poop puddle when it does come though.  I personally wouldn't call the doctor until a week passed.  If you want to help him along, try taking his temperature rectally or giving him a little bit of prune juice.

  • My 3rd is now 6 weeks & EBF. he went 7 days w/o a poop at 4 weeks. Pedi wasn't worried as ebf babies can use more of the bm with little left as waste. You need to worry, according to pedi & Lc, if there is a fever or abdominal swelling, or obvious signs of discomfort. The gas is nasty smelling! When he did go it was massive, so be ready. he still doesn't go daily but every few days. My 1st 2 were more frequent poopers as well, but this seems to be one of many ways this baby is different.

  • My LO was 2 weeks old and did not poop for 3 days.  He passed a lot of gas but he was in discomfort as well.  He was extremely fussy and crying a lot.  Finally we took him to the doctor and he ended up getting a suppository.  He finally pooped and it was massive.  I was laughing because it looked like he had such a look of relief after he pooped.  I was worried though because how does a 2 week old already have constipation problems!  The doctor said not to worry sometimes it happens.
  • DD is 7 weeks on monday and didnt poop for 4 days last week.  Lots of gas and discomfort.  Pedi told me to give her an ounce of warm water with about a 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of brown sugar.  Brown sugar is evidently a natural stool softener.  Within an hour she went!
