Zofran is flavored? what?

Maybe I'm kind of a doofus lol, but I saw on another post that one poster's Zofran tasted like butter mints and one tasted like strawberries.

Are you ladies on liquid zofran, or are the white pills to be chewed or dissolved in the mouth instead of swallowed whole?

On my prescription label it only says "take once every 6 hours as needed" but doesn't mention anything about dissolving/chewing them, so I assumed I was just to swallow them like any other pill.

Are there different kinds or is this something my pharmacist should have made me aware of?

Re: Zofran is flavored? what?

  • Mine is mint flavored, but I swallow it. The mint flavor makes me nauseous, so I can not keep it in my mouth that long. You are suppose to let it dissolve in your mouth.

There are different forms of Zofran.

When I went to the ER, they gave it to me in an IV, so obviously that one was liquid.

Before I left the hospital, they gave me a pill form one that dissolves either in my mouth or under my tongue, but they didn't have the non-bitter one, so the nurse crushed it up and put it in applesauce.

When I filled my prescription, it was in the same dissolve-able form, but tasted kind of like strawberries.

  • 4mg zofran is normally a dissolvable tablet you should put under your tongue. Mine is orange flavored but it is still just a little white pill.

  • I have 8 mg and neither this time or with DD have I ever been told ( MW, ER,OB,MFM,or pharmaraciat) to let it dissolve or that it was flavored, hmm y'all have fancy meds!
  • Alright then!! I guess next time I have to take it I will cross my fingers and keep it in my mouth for a second to see if it's flavored or dissolves rapidly.

I've had good luck swallowing it whole though, so that's a plus.

Are you taking name-brand Zofran, or the generic equivolent (Ondansetron HCL 4 MG)

  • As an FYI, different forms apply to the generic ondansetron, too.  In my 1st pregnancy I was prescribed the ODT (orally disintegrating) variety, which I found tasted pretty awful but got used to it.  In this pregnancy I was prescribed the tablets that you swallow with some water.  The ODT tablets came in a blister packet (I assume because they break down when met with moisture) and the regular tablets come in an ordinary pill bottle.  If you are still unsure which kind you have, check with your pharmacist.
  • the 1st bottle i got was the dissolvable kind- strawberry.

The refill I got, they told me 'these ones are swallow pill, is that ok" -  So they switched me up to the swollowable (word?) kind... SO there is different types.

  • It comes in regular pill form (swallow), dissolvable, and IV liquid. The dissolvable form does have a flavor to it, and I have always thought it was a grape flavor.
  • Hey ladies! I am a retail pharmacy tech for the last four years to present, so I just had to put my input. Like a pp has listed, they are different kinds of Zofran(Ondansetron) from swallow, ODT(orally dissenegrating tablet), liquid, to injection.

The flavored ones are going to be the ODTs and the liquid(in all 4 years, I have never dipsensed liquid form to anyone!) So i'm assuming the girls who got flavors were taking the ODTs.

The flavors are going to vary depending on the manufacturer. That's why some of yours has been mint, and some have been strawberry.

Please ladies, do not try to hold the tablet on your toungue to dissolve if your are not sure that you have the ODTs. You will get a very nasty taste and it will take a while for it to dissolve.

    :-)

  • Thankfully, I googled before I tried to dissolve it, haha. Otherwise I would have gotten a nasty surprise. Mine is the regular tablet.

Thanks for all the answers, ladies!
