potentially very stupid question

Can you dial an international number from a regular cell phone?  To do so, would I be paying out the butt for the call?

A reference for one of our summer interns is in Japan and wants me to call him after hours for the reference.  No problem if I can do it from home and not paying an exorbitant amount of money to do so.

Re: potentially very stupid question

  • I can from my cell. I have Verizon. It does cost more per minute though. Call your provider and see how much before you call.

  • Does your company have a teleconference line with a toll free number? That would be my first suggestion. Otherwise, you can dial from your own phone and if it is pricey, I would ask to expense it.

  • DH called me from his VZW cell phone (w/o an international plan) while I was in Korea and Japan (2008-2009) and it was around $3 per min.

  • Probably depends on your provider and plan.  I think I can call at no additional.  I have Verizon.
  • Get a phone card from a grocery store and use it with your cell. For $2 I can talk to Europe for 100 min :)

  • I did this once and would never do it again. ATT charged me something between $4 to 6 per min. when calling a friend in Korea for like only 10 min.

  • When I was in Italy a couple of weeks ago I used an ap on the iPad to call and text. Text was free and I bought 200 minutes for 3.99. I think it's called text now
