We've got a couple parties for DS's friends turning 6 this spring.
When you get the invite to a classmate's party and you don't know the kid that well, do you have a "go to" gift?
At 6, kids usually have every different type of toy they could want. I usually lean towards books, because they don't take up a ton of space and you can always use a book. Any other ideas?
Re: Do you have a "go to" birthday present gift for kids' parties?
Kindy and First grade boys have been getting legos. Crafts for the girls.
For the girls turning 4 (she only has two boys in her class, so I haven't really had to deal), I either do a craft or a more inexpensive princess Barbie or something.
6 y.o. boy? Legos is the goto gift. They never can have too many Legos at this age and they could care less if it is a set they already have since it is the pieces that count.
Other than that, I stock up on what looks like a good toy whenever I find a great buy (like 70% off Target, kidswoot.com specials, etc.). We go to at least 3 parties a month, so the backstock never helps keep the cost down. We usually add a book as a little "extra".
For girls 7+ and up, I love this:

When I was growing up, my mom's token gift was the Grow a Frog gift. EVERYONE got one.
All kidding aside, we've done science kits.
Mad Science Egg Drop Challenge
Toysmith Gold Mining Kit
I just bought 10 of these HABA games to bring back with us. It's a German company that makes some great wooden toys/games.
The game is basically a smaller, reverse Jenga type game for 4 players. DH, SS (16 yo), DD (3yo) and I love playing the game.
