How much is acceptable?
With my 1st twin pregnancy, I was super healthy and MAYBE had 1 or 2 sodas thorughout those 8 months (no joke). I drank water and juice and that was about it.
I have always liked coffee but it REALLY came into play after I had 2 newborns to look after that I fell in love with it. I'm not really talking regular coffee. I like the coffee drinks like cappuccino, etc. Basically espresso drinks.
I do drink mostly water with this pregnancy. I shoot for 3 liters a day. If I have a soda, I buy the small 8oz cans to limit myself but I have just been craving my carmel cappuccino!
My doctor said I could have a tall and I have been used to venti's. I know I couldn't have a small little cup of it and feel satisfied so I have been basically staying away from it so I don't get hooked again.
If any other espresso lovers are out there, what do you do to keep up with your cravings? Do you get a small cup or still get your large cup but less often?
Re: Let's talk caffeine........
I cut myself off coffee in the 1st trimester, but I've occasionally have a small cup now. Or if my husband orders something, I'll have a little bit of his.
You can order all those espresso drinks in decaf too.

I'm a biiiig caffeine drinker, so this was one of the first things I researched when I found out that I was pregnant. I found that they've not been able to prove a 'safe' amount of caffeine during pregnancy, but that doesn't mean it's definitely unsafe. I've read that you need to keep under everything from 150mg right up to 300mg. I think the general consensus is 200mg (about 1 cup of filter coffee) is safe.
When I'm at home I drink tea (the English kind) all the time. At first I limited myself to 1 cup a day (about 60mg of caffeine for my brand), if that, but now that baby's a bit more developed I don't think twice about having two or even three cups.
Try this, maybe: ask if they can make you a tall-sized whatever, but put it in a venti sized cup, and top it up with milk/foam? A lot of it may be psychological.
I LOOOVE/Cherish/Adore/would marry my coffee...lol. I wake up and want it instantly.
Normally I would drink 2-4 cups a day but since I got pregnant I drink 1 cup from my Kurig a day or one medium from Dunkin Donuts. I did this with my first pregnancy as well. If I don't drink it, not only can't i get thru the day, but I'll get a massive headache. I just limit it...that's the key I think.
My mom is a pure coffee addict...i'm talking she drinks the stuff from morning til night. She did this in all of her pregnancies (probably why me and all 4 of my siblings also love coffee) and we all turned out okay.
I'm all about cuation and moderation but I don't think a cup of coffee or two a day will hurt anything.

My OB said to keep it under 200 mg of caffeine a day. The studies where there have been negative effects on the babies have been over 200 mg. I try to keep it way under 200 mg.
Coffee has alot more caffeine than soda. Most sodas (unless you are talking about a Mountain Dew or a Jolt or a Red Bull) have about 40 mg's. Red Bull has about 80 mg of caffeine. A Starbuck's Grande (16 oz) has about 330 mg of caffeine - which would be too much. A Mc Donald's small cup of coffee has about 100 mg. Most brands seem to go between 100-200 mg for a small. So, to play it safe, I wouldn't go any bigger than a small if you are opting for coffee and I would stick to one a day. You are better off with soda.

I must have my coffee too. I use my Keurig most days. I have one cup of iced coffee a day (prob the equivalent to a DD med iced), not sure how much caffeine that is. But I use ice and the medium setting on my brewer. It also gets a little watered down with the ice. I don't drink hot coffee anymore, b/c it gives me heartburn.
On days when I want a treat, I get a medium DD iced coffee and don't feel the least bit bad about it.
When I first found out I was PG, I used the Half-Caff K cups but I could really taste the difference and it wasn't good at all, so I switched back to my Donut Shop Kcups which are the most like Dunks to me. Really I think unless you are pounding drinks with mega shots of espresso or macchiatos everyday, you are fine. I know some people differ on this, but I think am medium coffe a day is fine--if you are not drinking other caffeinateed drinks.
I do not drink soda btw, I have one or the other--never both. And I need my coffee fix in the a.m. so I always choose coffee over soda and drink water for the rest of the day.
I have caffeine every day -- often a latte or a soda (I try to keep it to one, and usually a medium instead of a large or venti
), and I don't count my chocolate fix.
In first tri I picked up Starbucks nutritional info as well as checking out the other drinks I liked, like Coke and root beer, and I was very careful then about making sure I didn't go over 200 mg, though I'm relaxed about it now.
The problems with caffeine are a) an increased risk of miscarriage if consumed excessively (meaning possibly over 200mg, probably over 300mg a day) in the first trimester, and b) dehydrating one's self. I try to keep it to a reasonable level, but I don't think there's any real risk there at this point, and as long as I'm drinking sufficiently.
But then, I'm anti-mommy-guilt, which I think gets quite out of hand in America. I don't know how I'd go to work every day without a bit of caffeine to get me through, and I'm confident I'm making the right decisions for myself and my pregnancy, even if they aren't the most conservative of all possible options.
Of course, there's always the opinion that caffeine is NEVER good for you, forget just in pregnancy, which has some validity. But I'm not giving it up anytime soon.
