Military Families

Anyone at or near Jacksonville, FL?

Just found out that my husband got orders to Jacksonville, FL....we're so excited right now! Big Smile We plan on buying a house and I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what areas would be good to raise a family at and any other tips as far as being stationed there.  Thanks!

  • I'm not in Jacksonville but we are at Kings Bay in Georgia. Only a 30 minute drive to Jax. I can tell you the weather kicks ass :-)

  • I'm not in Jacksonville, but I wanted to tell you to check out the Moving House for the Military Spouse group on Facebook, I use it before we PCS to a new place. You can message them questions about the area, they'll post your question, and usually you'll get 20 or 30 good responses from people familiar with the area.

  • We are stationed at Jacksonville and I really like it here. I'm not sure if you have kids in school or not, but if you are going to buy a house the St. Johns County school district is the best in the area. There are a bunch of great neighborhoods with lots of kids and young families.

  • I have two cousins stationed at Jacksonville and both live in St. Augustine.

  • I am originally from FL and am quite familiar with Jacksonville. There are a few great areas in Jacksonville but I strongly recommend living on St. Augustine which is about 25 minutes south of Jacksonville. There area several nice housing developments and great schools. That's also where the large oulet mall is lol.

  • We are in Jax...right now we are living in Green cove Springs but it is such a long drive espically with gas shooting up.  But something closer is Fleming Island.  It is really nice, but also more expensive.  I would avoid living in Duval county, deff go with Clay or St. John's.  St Augustine is nice too but it is just so far away unless yall are willing to commute.

  • Thanks for all the advice Big Smile
  • I lived from the age I was 18th month to the time I moved at the age of 24. My Husband got station at Fort Carson, CO. All my family still live there. I would live in Orange Park or Fleming Island. The schools in Jacksonville are not the best. I lived all the my life in Orange Park which means I went from k-12 school and loved it. I also got my AA and BA at UNF. If your Husband is at NSA Jax it is on the same road. If he is at May port then it a little bit of a drive but worth it. Also the traffic does suck no matter where you live so try to find the back roads.
