Anybody ever go to a nutritionist?

I was thinking about going to a nutritionist to try and lose some weight and learn to eat a healthier balanced diet and I was just wondering if any of you have gone to one and how your experience was?

Re: Anybody ever go to a nutritionist?

  •  i did not, but i worked with a trainer at the gym last may/june and she taught me everything about it.  I never had to loose weight and it was all new to me and it ended up well.  with just watching what i eat (no diets) and exercise i was able to loose the 70 lbs i gained when pregnant.  food accounts for 80% of weight loss

  • I have - and can safely say - about the one I saw...  It is time in my life I cannot get back!

It's great to say eat a starvation diet, it's another thing to say eat a starvation diet to a high level competitive athlete which is what this chick did...  She tried to tell me I only needed 20g/day of protein TOPS when for my sport the average rec's are significantly higher than that (closer to 1g./lb. of bodyweight/day) just to support/maintain muscle conditioning and repair to prevent injury.  From there it was just downhill because I had told her that I have food allergies/intolerances to which she completely disregarded and told me to eat lots of then when I reminded her of these she sort of threw in the towel so I left there not having anything worth while...  Not even a "if you go out to a restaurant, here's some rec's of what to order at.." or anything really functional...

  • I went to one about 7 years ago when my cholesterol was high (315 at age 23 was not too pretty especially since I was only at a slightly-high weight.) I thought she was helpful. We talked about portion control. I was already eating a low-fat diet but she showed me some hidden sources of sugars/carbs since my triglycerides were also high. (I had no idea then that you could have too much milk- but I was drinking 3 gallons a week by myself! ha!) Anyway, I found it educational. Perhaps it depends on the nutritionist?

I also have a very close friend who is a nutritionist and I send her random questions from time to time (e.g. they're always changing the recommendations on how many eggs to eat. I'm confused- can you fill me in?) and her info is always helpful.

    Good luck!
