What should I ask for during my RCS?

I was reading some of your posts and it seems that some of you did not have your arms tied down.  I did not know this was an option!!!  This might help with my anxiety that I experienced during CS#1.

What else should I be in the know about?  (Like why can't DH be there as a support during the spinal?-they do epidurals at the bedside so what is the difference?)

Thanks ladies!

Re: What should I ask for during my RCS?

  • Well this time I was considering asking for classical music playing in the background, pink satin sheets and a margarita right after delivery Big Smile

Honestly I was so worried the first time about the whole procedure I just did what I was told!!  I didn't even consider that I could ask for certain things.  But if they try to tie my arms I will ask if we really have to do that and this time I will tell them no, I am not taking my wedding bands off.

I really don't know why DH can't be in the room when they do epidural/spinal.  They wouldn't let DH in for my epidural either - I just thought that maybe it was a liability thing??

  • Remember that all hospitals are different. At our hospital they do not allow anyone in the room for the epi. But it is more for liability reasons than anything else. A lot of people get weezy, faint etc when they see something like that. I don't know if there are many hospitals in your area but you may have to switch in order to get the things you want if they mean that much to you.

I really liked being taken right back to my room and not a surgical recovery area like most hospitals seem to do. I was able to be with baby and hubby right after.

Sorry I don't have any recs. for you but I wish you the best of luck.

  • I was told that it is up to the anesthesiologist as to whether people can be in the room when the spinal is administered. I found this out because when I had DS2, my SIL was in nursing school to be a labor and delivery nurse so we wanted to get permission to have DH and her in the room for my RCS. It was all up to the anesthesiologist. Luckily I had one who didn't mind at all. It was great because she got to do his apgars and weigh him. It was a great experience for her. There was also some other students from her program in there. I think I became their topic of discussion in their next class. LOL!

I wanted to add that he explained that I am his # 1 priority, if others are in the room and can't handle seeing the procedure done then he has to worry about them too and that takes time away from the patient. This made total sense.

  • I would take your rings off - the metal interferes with the cautery and you could end up with burns on your fingers.  Otherwise most other things are hospital policy or anesthesia preference.  Just having had one, SO was not allowed in the room for spinal, but was there for the section.  My arms were loosely strapped down.  I think it's more important to ask if you are getting meds after baby is out, what kind, etc.

That's interesting but I guess it would make sense in my situation too -- my husband is a doctor and I asked if he could be there when I got the spinal and they let him.  The anesthesiologist I had was super nice and was literally the only doctor in the room with any sort of bedside manner - kind of ironic -- but it turns out he was a family practice doctor before he did his anesthesia residency so I guess that makes sense. : )

  • I hated being strapped down, but I had the shakes so bad I don't know what would have happened if i hadn't had my arms tied down.
