Agreed! That must've been such a trying situation--to be halfway across the world and have your baby!

I also couldn't believe that they got to hold their daughter while she was on the vent!

  • Crazy. I can't even imagine.

P.S. I held my daughter while she was on the vent. She was 3 days old & I had a nervous flipping breakdown in my hospital room. One of the extenders from the NI came over to my room, had a long talk with me, then told me she had decided I needed to hold DD. I couldn't believe it; I had assumed holding her was WEEKS away. I am In tears right now just thinking of that moment.  of course, it was ridiculously supervised & really they put her on a pillow then put the pillow in my arms. That extender moved to Ohio before we got discharged & when she stopped in on her last night to say goodbye to us, I sobbed on her shoulder. I will NEVER forget her as the angel who let me hold my sweet girl. Gah. *tears*

  • I saw this article, too.  One thing that I was thinking about after reading it was how I always felt extremely blessed for good insurance because we added up DD's 96 days in the NICU and it was 3/4 of a million dollars.  I couldn't imagine this experience for this couple for so many reasons.

P.S. We got to hold DD on the vent, too, but extremely supervised and time limited.

  • I live in Vancouver and grateful that DDs care is 100% covered under our provincial health care plan. I am stunned by the insurance company not covering her care. Hopefully with their story being made public, someone will step up and assist with their financial burden.

I live in Ontario and for my whole pregnancy (including all of the NST and BPPs), Owen's delivery, and NICU stay I only paid $126 out of pocket.  Even know my health insurance through work pays for his medications with us just having to pay for  the dispensing fee.  Even the government covers his therapy every ten days.  I am will never  complain about paying taxes again.

  • Wow that must have been extremely difficult for them all.  Not to mention how much money they owe now.  I don't know how things work in Canada, but is the baby not a Canadian citizen because she was born there?  Why did she not qualify for Canadian medical benefits?  Non-US citizens give birth in our country all the time and don't have to pay a dime.  That is crazy.

The baby is not automatically a Canadian citizen.  Canadian citizenship is not immediately granted to a child born in Canada if, at the time of his/her birth, neither of his/her parents is a Canadian citizen or Canadian permanent resident. That being said, the child is not automatically entitled to provincially-paid health-care.

The reason why we have as some people call it "free" healthcare is because we pay for it out of our taxes.  If you don't pay Canadian taxes then you're not eligible for healthcare.  The hospitals and doctors will treat you but you'll owe money to reimburse the government for paying their salary for their services.

  • I'm not sure about the law exactly, but my kids are Canadian citizens because they were born in Canada even though neither of us are citizens or perm residents (we have temp work visas only).
  • (and we didn't have to do anything special, just register for their birth certificates)
