horrible night, help!

so for over a week now, ds has been doing this thing when he wakes up at night (3-4 times/night on a good night). he'll be screaming, this little boy doesn't wimper or fuss, i'll go in and pick him up and he'll like try to climb up me. he's not happy with me just holding him and shushing, sometimes he'll calm right down if i hold him on his side and rock him, but usually the ONLY thing that works is nursing him.

last night he was in bed by 7:45pm, woke up at 9 and did the climb thing. i nursed him. he went back to sleep until 11, screaming. tried to just keep him in his bed and pat, wrong! fake nursed with paci. back to sleep for maybe 45minutes. same thing except this time i nursed him. but then he would not go back to sleep.

walking, singing, silence, different positions, nothing helped. i ended up giving him some gas drops, searched for gripe water but we are out. he's teething (but it seems like he's been working on a top tooth for a month) so i gave him some tylenol.

2.5hrs later he was asleep...in my bed. the first time i've brought him in bed with me since getting him in his crib 2months ago. he slept for 3hrs and then woke up the same way.

by this time it's somewhere around 6am, i put him back in his bed and walked out. he cried for about 10minutes and was out until 8am, which is really late for him.

HELP! what is the climbing thing? he's never been a good sleeper but i thought things were getting a little better. i know this was just a bad night, most of the time i go in, feed and he's out. but i'm exhausted and it's only 9am!

Re: horrible night, help!

  • Hmm...we had a bad night like this last night. I didn't give the boob but I did have to pacify him and rock him back to sleep for an hour (twice!)...I think it's either teething or gas. He got some new food last night so I'll see if it happens again tonight.

I hope your day goes by quickly! :-( I wish I had actual advice for you...but that's what I *think*  is happening with DS.

  • Well as you know from my post below, I am no expert ;) but the climbing is probably is just wanting to stand and practice using his legs (maybe)? DS does this, but during the day. He is also wanting me to hold/ rock him much less, for naps he arches and it's like "mom, just put me down already". Now I don't know what your thoughts are on the subject, but have you considered CIO? I know it's not for everyone... we did it, and for the most part (voiding those bad nights I have mentioned lol) it has helped, a lot. Anyways, sorry I couldn't be much help!! Good luck!

  • I totally know what you mean about the climbing! It's different from the times that a LO just wants to stand. DD seems to do it when she's overly tired and doesn't want to sleep. She does it a lot before naps, when we're walking around patting her back, trying to get her to that drowsy state before laying her down. When she starts climbing and I've just fed her and know her diaper is ok, I feel like my only choice is to lay her down. She screams, which I hate. :(  But when she's that tired, she'll usually cry for less than 2 minutes before she calms down and either plays for a little bit and then sleeps, or just goes straight to sleep. We've even had to do it at night recently. It sucks, but like I said, I always feel like I have no other option short of bringing her into bed with us and nursing her all night. We did that nightly for quite a while, but we really don't want to stay in that pattern.

Sorry... I know this doesn't help much!

  • thanks ladies, it's been a loonnng day. not sure what is going on. something has to be up because normally he'd be asleep by now. he's right beside me wide awake. ugh!

i have done CIO. it worked great for the beginning of the night and i'd say 80% of the time, ds will go right to sleep without much fussing at all. it's just the waking up that i don't know what to do with.

  • well i'm experiencing the same thing with one of my twins. he has been a great sleeper for the last couple of months until last week. i know he's teething but we've been giving tylenol and motrin. nothing helps except nursing him and putting him back to bed. i wish they could tell us!

  • DS use to do the "climbing thing" a lot in the middle of the night. He started reflux meds about a month ago and he doesn't do it anymore and is sleeping better. He doesn't wake up screaming anymore. He will wake up and whine or whatever but not scream like before.

I don't know if they can develop reflux at this point, or if you have ever thought he might have it, but it has helped us.

i'll have to look more into this. thanks. i never really thought about it because we didn't have any issues in the beginning.

and pp, i totally wish ds could tell me what's wrong. that would be so nice!
