LO's getting giant boils....why & how to treat?

I have never had a boil but both my girls have recently been getting them. They look pretty painful and they won't let me near the affected areas. They appear on the back of their legs and their butts. What causes them and how do I treat them?

  • You need to take them to the doctor ASAP.

  • These health problems make people more susceptible to skin infections:

    • Diabetes
    • Problems with the immune system
    • Poor nutrition
    • Poor hygiene
    • Exposure to harsh chemicals that irritate the skin

  • I am not a doctor, but I do work in a medical office and it sounds like a staph infection/MRSA. I would take them in ASAP!

  • I agree with taking them to the Dr. If I had to guess, I'd say it's staph.

  • Most boils are caused by a germ (staphylococcal bacteria). This germ enters the body through tiny nicks or cuts in the skin or can travel down the hair to the follicle.

  • Doctor.

also, it could be ringworm. apparently common in kids, and not related to poor hygiene.

  • I've had ringworm - from a dog I rescued. It's not painful. Just itchy.

  • Please take them to the doctor right away. This happened to us last month, ped's thought it was a boil on his butt, and LO ended up in the hospital and had to have surgery to remove.

  • Oh my gosh! I had no idea it was this serious. They are bathed everyday with an occasional skipped day. Can't be poor hygiene. I'll call the pedi asap. Now I'm freaking out a little.

Koltyn gets bathed every single day. We wash our hands before and after every diaper change. The kid is super clean. Unfortunately, you can do everything in the book and it still doesn't matter. It sucks and was horrible to watch him go through what he did, but please get those kids to the doctor. This is not something you want to mess around with.

  • LO just had a nasty staph infection. You need to take them to the doctor ASAP as it could be MRSA. My pedi said they are becoming more and more common in the diaper area. They put LO on Bactrim and gave her an antibiotic cream. Make sure you soak the areas in a clean tub, that will help it come up and drain.

ETA: it has nothing to do with hygeine. If they have the tiniest cut, scrape or open rash the bacteria can get in there. If you want to blame something- blame all the antibacterial soaps.

I am so sorry your LO went through that. I already have a call into the pedi. Waiting on a call back now. DD1 currently has 2 (1 previously that popped on it's own). DD2 had 2 previously but not any now. I have soaked them in warm baths and put warm compresses to treat them but now that there are more I wondered if I should have done anything different.

  • Most people have already said this, but it is probably staph and they HAVE to have antibiotics for it to go away. Not to mention, they may have to be cut open and drained (plus they might want to test the "drainage". It can be VERY serious so please take them to the doctor soon.

FWIW, I got staph 3 different times on my legs while I was pregnant - they HURT so bad, I had to have only one drained though. I had to be on medication all 3 times...it was never MRSA staph (thank God), but my OB told me it was from my lowered immune system being pregnant.

  • The nurse called me back and agrees with all of you that DD1 needs to be seen today. Her appt is in a lil over an hour. She said to give her tylenol or motrin in advance. Since DD2 doesn't currently have any, they can't test her. :( I feel horrible now....

Try not to worry but so glad she'll be seen quickly today.  Hope both girls are feeling better soon.  You acted quickly as soon as you knew it was serious so that's all you can do.  Hugs

My older son had a little chapped area by his mouth that turned into impetigo (which is also a staph infection). I've been putting ointment on it, and it's not a big deal.

Try not to freak until a doctor looks at it! Hope they feel better quick!

Good luck at the Dr. and don't feel bad. It could happen to any of us, and I believe is relatively easy to treat.
