8 month sleep regression?

Please tell me we have not hit this, but has anyone else? I have read about it in the past, along with the 4 month regression, which impacted DS terribly! However, after my sleepy little guy slept and slept the other day (I posted thinking he was getting sick or teething) he has now woken up quite a few times the past 2 nights. STILL no signs of teeth, so I am not sure that's it. Supposedly the 8 or 9 month regression in sleep has to do with all the development that is going on. DS was born at the end of the month, so one of the youngest babes here, so hoping you all can shed some light on this. Anyone else get hit?

Re: 8 month sleep regression?

  • I can't really help but, DS has been quite the fighter going to bed.  We've had to let him CIO before bed the last week or so.  We haven't had to do that for months!

Also, I had just gotten him to nap in his crib and now he is waking up crying every time I put him down in it.  I hope this passes soon.

I had no idea there was a sleep regression at this age.  Good to know.

  • i don't know what to think about regressions. for me and my house, what started out as the 4 month wakeful turned into just a baby that doesn't sleep longer than 3 hours...ever!

seriously it's been 4 month wakeful, 5 month teething, 6 month CIO, 7 month teething, and after last night, the 8th month doesn't look so hot either!

but in your case, i hope it's a fluke. i have to hold faith that there are some babies that sleep great with only crappy nights here and there instead of the exact opposite which is the case here!

    good luck mama!

OMG same! The past 3 nights! The first 2 were only a couple mins, but last night was at least 10 (I didn't count). Geesh, hoping this passes soon!

So sorry to hear you have had such a rough road!! I know I hate to sound like a complainer, but I just wonder, are there even babies that truly STTN the vast majority of the time, or are parents just not counting these little "hiccups"? Because I think in general DS has done pretty well, but people IRL look at me like I have 3 heads when I say he doesn't STTN every night.... is there just a secret code that I am just supposed to lie and say "yes"? ;)

i've talked to a lot of mommies IRL lately and it just seems like i'm the only one going through this. for a while i thought it was because lo is ebf. then i talked to a new mommy of a 10week old who is ebf and her lo sleeps 6hr stretches at night. went to a bday party with a lot of los there and all of them said they were sttn. i'm starting to just not bring up the sleeping conversation. i haven't gotten anywhere with it and end up just feeling like a failure some how. when i do find someone who says thier lo didn't sleep, they usually follow with, 'it wasn't until they were 2 years old!" yikes! so yeah, i don't know.

maybe if i start lying, things will get better! in church i honestly have people asking about his sleep but in a mocking kinda way and it gets to me.

maybe i'm in for the long haul, i'm not sure. hope your situation is wayyyy better though!

  • I am sorry to say that there was no regression of this sort in my experience thus far. A few times he woke up screaming when cutting teeth or perhaps what could be fear of being alone or even bad dreams? I also think at this age they begin to try to crawl and etc. so their active minds have a hard time shutting back down if they are roused. I read somewhere that as they grow their patterns become more adult-like so they do wake here or there every night which is normal. They just have to learn not to be scared and to go back to sleep unassisted, which takes time. Again, no expert here but letting him CIO helped too. While I CIO with him, it really taught him when its sleep time vs. play time. They are getting to the age where they are beginning to assert themselves (which is a great and awesome thing!) but when its sleep time as mothers we need to assert what we know is best.

And FWIW... I know I rarely post on this board.... but I love every single one of you. Really because the honesty that is present is so rare. Seriously I love knowing I am not alone in fighting sometimes.
