How do I start with cloth diapers?

I know many of you crafty mamas make your own, but if I wanted to buy a few CDs to see how they go, what type do you recommend and from where to buy? I can sew, but my free time is very limited, so I'd like to try some first before investing time in making them. Also, what type and/or size to start with? DD is wearing Swaddlers size 3. I think she's 19lbs or so, but won't know for sure until her check-up.

  • I started with Kawaii diapers. You can pretty much make your whole stash for about $100. But you can start with a few at first. They are all one size diapers so your LO will fit until she potty trains. They do have snaps and the snaps are trickier than most other snap diapers but for the price they are worth it! I also watched a video on YouTube that gave me a better idea of the types of diapers out there, how to use them and the positives and negatives of each. It also goes over wash routines and accessories. I'm on my phone but if you go to YouTube and type in "Cloth diapering 101" you will find the 7 part series. There is a CD board on here too that is very helpful! Welcome to the addiction!

  • Do you have a local CD or natural parenting store near you? I would suggest going there first. If not Jillians Draws is a great place online where you can to a trial on the  different types/styles of diapers. I LOVE LOVE my Bum Genius 4.0 one size. They fit him great and no leaks!

  • I would do a trial. I am currently doing the Jillian's drawer trial. It's nice because you can different types and different brands.

  • I started cg'ing about 2 months ago with a trial through Jillian's Drawers.  It was nice because I got to try out a bunch of different diapers beforing committing.  It's a $10 trial fee plus $10 shipping, so $20 for 3 weeks, plus cost to ship them back.  I recommend starting there.

I also love my Kawaii's, and wish that I had more of them!

  • Another vote for a diaper trial. I did one through Modern Cloth and I loved it. It let me try out around 10 different types/brands of diapers to see what we liked and what actually worked on Ev. For actual purchasing I use Kelly's Closet a lot because they generally have free diaper codes and free shipping.

  • For ease, I'd go straight for the pockets. Saz'hrah sales kawaiis in her new store she is opening, Bubamara Kids. Just Google it and you will find it. I ordered 3 from her. At only $9 each, they are great. I also ordered two bum genius 4.0s just to see what all the fuss was about. They are great, but so far I don't see a huge difference between them and the Kawaiis. Especially not for double the price. Of the 13 pockets we now have, 4 are snaps and the rest are hook and loop. I prefer the hook and loop a little more. We have only been CDing for a month though, so take my recs with a grain if salt. lol.

Eta: look for your local Just Between Friends event coming up. I got two swadlebees there for $3.
  • Kawaiis make up a big portion of my stash. I first started off with just three pockets and washed daily until I was sure I was going to follow through with it. Hook and loop closures are very user friendly too. I eventually branched out to AIO's (my favorite type) and AI2's. I never really found the fitted or prefold love.

  • Thanks for the advice! I'm thinking of trying the Bum Genius 4.0 and Kawaiis to compare. Has anyone ordered from this site? I found it through price grabber and they have a cute print:

I ordered a bunch of BG elementals from them when they were having a killer sale. The only thing I recall was their shipping was pretty high if you were ordering under $75. Otherwise it was great and I got a good deal.

I like sweetbottoms baby boutique, https://www.sweetbottomsbaby.com/. Shipping is fast and she has great customer service, prices are competitive too. She sells Kawaii diapers and all the big brand named ones.

I ordered my Kawaiis from a seller in Canada but I cannot recall the name of the site, but I know she sells on ebay under mayflower_garden. Shipping was expensive so you're best to order in bulk from Canada.

  • I started CD in January and so far I love it.  I have Kawaii, FuzziBunz, BG, Grovia, Flips, Swaddlebees and Blueberry.  I started out with Kawaii and really like them for day time.  I had a problem with them leaking at night (DS is a heavy wetter).  I even used their Heavy Wetter model and it leaked.  Now I use BG 4.0 at night and haven't had any problems.  I don't like BG during the day because they are SO bulky.

My go to diapers during the day are FB and Kawaii.  When we go out I prefer Grovia or Flips when I'm out of Grovia's.

I agree with pp about starting with a trial or going to a store where you can see and feel them before purchasing.  GL!

I second these videos! I probably would have done a trial had I not watched these videos. She gives a good idea of what each type is and what you are in for. I highly suggest them. I went with pockets and I love them.
