s/o kids activities

Do you allow your child(ren) to participate in mulitple activities during the same season?

For us, Girl Scouts is like 1x a month and church school is not an option - but otherwise they have to pick 1 activity at a time.  Alex started dance a month late and is stopping a month early, both because of soccer season.

Re: s/o kids activities

  • If it is a weekly type of thing, we have always stuck to 1 or 2 at most.  Right now my girls just have swimming and I love it.  Once they are older and have homework and all of that, I will be sticking to 1 activity (not counting religious school).

We try to do only one activity at a time: dance, swim. gymnastics, music, soccer, etc.

I don't like running all the time plus I find they get too overtried and sometimes just want to stay home and play.

  • Kinda.  We'll always have Sunday school and they'll be in swimming until they learn to be safe swimmers.  DS can handle a little more now than he could last year, so he has two additional activities.  But, we're not looking to add more.  We'll probably switch hockey for baseball when the seasons change.  DD only does dance so far and I'm not sure if she'll ever be interested in anything else.  I wouldn't have a problem adding Daisies in next year though.

  • Yes but that is because I no longer work.  Before with both of us working it was impossible.  He is getting ready to start soccer and baseball.  He asked to do these sports so as long as he is enjoying it, I am ok with that.  If he decides he doesn't want to do it, we will complete the session and then not do it.
  • My daughter has dance class runs from September - June; it's only one night a week for an hour, then they have a recital in June.  Then 2 times a month she has a Brownie meeting after school for an hour.  She isn't in any sports.  My son isn't in any sports but on occasion will take golf lessons on a Saturday morning and those usually run for 6 weeks.  They attend Catholic school so religion class is during the school day.
  • Right now our rule is one sport and one activity and eventually one musical instrument, but that doesn't include swimming lessons that we require, but we also kinda push the girls to do the same thing.  They're doing drama and dance this semester. This summer they're supposed to do swim team.  DD2 isn't sure about it but if she has to go to practice with us anyway and they'd be in the same age group so I'm pushing her to consider it just so she's not bored and to get her active this summer.
  • All of the kids do swimming (year round) the boys do soccer and yoga (they are both working on low tone in their trunk muscles, so this is more therapy than a sport).  Both DD's do gymnastics, and DD1 just started ballet.  I'm letting the kids do what interests them now (while practice is only one day a week) when they get older and sports require more time, they will have to choose what they want to concentrate on.

  • I WOHM, so I stick to 2 and they are allowed to pick which activity.  We always do swimming in the summer (and they love that!). The older two have become "okay" swimmers over the last year.   DD did not use floaties at all last year but I will still make her go to lessons.

  • I forgot about Sunday school in my answer below. A would either be in church with us or Sunday school so I didn't really count that. Girl Scouts is 1x a month for us too, so not a big time commitment. We've been keeping her in swimming lessons 1x a week because her comfort level in the water goes down significantly if we skip a session. We all swim as a family afterwards so I feel like that's almost better than staying home. A is also in soccer on Saturday mornings. I think it would be too much if it was during the week, but since it's a weekend morning, it doesn't interfere with our day. I think it would be too much to add more. I guess my limit is 2 weekly activities besides church.

Yup, I have the kids in multiple activites.  DS (6 years old) has tennis (Mondays), swimming (Fridays) and soccer (Saturdays) - rugby on Sundays just ended and the tennis is new this term.  DD (4 years old) has gymnastics (Mondays), swimming (Fridays) and tennis (Saturdays).

With the exception of rugby, all of their activities are non-competitive at this stage.  Basically they are just fun play time, so to me its pretty much the same thing as playing at the park, but they are also learning a sport.  Once they get a little older we'll start doing more education-focused activites.  But, for right now I want them to experience as many sports as they can handle until they figure out what they like.
