Re: hospital and taking placenta?

  • Totally depends on the hospital- even in my city it varies from simply signing a waiver to needing a ($$$) court order. Your OB should know. If not, call the L&D department. I've spoken to the Director of Risk Management at two hospitals here, so you could also ask for that person.

  • The nurse actually brought that up on our hospital tour last week.  She said to make sure it's in your birth plan if you have one and to tell them right away.  Once it's removed from the room it's really hard to get back.  It didn't seem like a big deal at all but I'm sure it varies by hospital.

  • At my hospital you just have to sign a release form. They've made it seem like it's really easy to do, but I haven't had my baby yet, so I'm not 100%. My doula will be encapsulating it for me.

  • Definitely ask, but if I were you I might avoid telling your doctor what your intention is with it.  Many people plant it under a tree or use it to make a print.

Absolutely no judgement...I encapsulated and will do it again.  But I think talking to an OB about that is asking for a lecture, judgement, strange looks, and her thinking you're nuts...potentially.

Even our very very NB friendly MW group all assumed we were planting it.  And I was okay with that being the impression we left.

    FWIW.

GL to you with your hospital's policies!! :)

  • Many hospitals in the area have no problem with it, of course the one I'm delivering at no longer releases it, so it does vary. The MW said she could "forget" to put it in the bucket and we could smuggle it out, but there's no guarantee she'll be the one delivering me. My friend who does it (and is a doula) wanted my help to get them to start releasing again, but sadly it would involve petitioning the head of the dept I work in and I felt too awkward about it.

  • Yes, it depends on the hospital. The hospital I'm delivering at has no problem with it. They don't even make you sign a waiver.

  • yeah i was going to say we wanted it for persnal reasons and if he asked further then mention planting it or making a print with it. this is why i havent brougt it up yet because i know its not mainstream ans will raise a few eyebrows at my docs office.

  • In addition to talking to your doctor, I would talk to the hospital directly to get any forms needed. as early as possible If for some reason they have a policy that violates your state laws regarding "products of conception" then you may want time to address that.
  • My hospital is used to it and there's no waiver or anything. They just require that you have an ice chest of some sort to take it home- I have it in my birth plan that's signed off by my DR, and the hospital will freeze it for us to take.
