Preemies

When did your preemie sit without support

Just wondering if I'm worrying for nothing but having a hard time finding milestones for preemies. My son was 7 months on March 17th. He was born at 35 weeks so he adjusted age is a little over 6 months. He can sit with support, ie) leaning on the back of the couch or with my hnd behind him, but as soon as the support is taken away he falls right over. He also shows no desire to sit up, even when sitting up against the  couch he wiggles himself down until he's laying on his back. I normally wouldnt be concerned but it seems I am surrounded by babies grant you all born full term, but both are sitting up without support and are considerably younger than him. One girl just 5 months the other 4.5 months. Just trying to get a general idea of when they should be sitting up

Re: When did your preemie sit without support

  • My LO was born at 35 weeks also.  He was IUGR so he was (and is) very small for his age.  He's about 14.5 lbs at 9.5 months now.  My understanding is that preemies, especially IUGR babies, tend to have less core muscle strength and tone than term babies.  I've found that my LO hits his cognitive milestones right at the average times and physical ones on the late end of average.  I think he didn't sit up really well unsupported until the week he turned 7 months old.  He just stayed sitting up one day, and we never looked back!

Does your LO get lots of practice on the floor?  Is he going to daycare?  My DS used to go, and they were fantastic.  But I don't think he got quite as much freedom to try to sit up on his own (and fall over ha).  He was home for 3 days with a cold, and in those three days, I just put him all the floor constantly when he played.  He picked it right up!  Same with crawling and pulling up.

  • I'm finding the same with our son, his cognitive development seems to be pretty close to normal, but physical development is a little behind. He is at daycare and do think that maybe he doesnt get as much floor time as I would give him at home, but I try as much as possible to give him time on the floor. He's just learned to roll over both ways so that was exciting! You said around 7 months, was that true age or adjusted age?

  • Around 8.5 - 9 months here for sitting.   Crawled at 10.5 months.  Walked at 16.5 months.

  • We're working on sitting right now with his therapist.  We're working on his core muscles.  She says she isn't "concerned" that he isn't sitting yet but we need to work on developing his core muscles so he doesn't fall further behind.

  • Our girls are almost 8 mo (almost 7 adjusted). They both started sitting unsupported about 3-4 weeks ago. One pushes to sitting and is starting to pull to standing, but our IUGR baby can't push to sitting yet.
  • 7 months actual 5 adjusted.

  • 9months actual/6months adjusted. Is your LO seen by EI? We worked on sitting for a long time... but finally he just got it. So keep working on it! He was a late crawler... but I think he will be walking by or before he turns 1 year adjusted! :)
  • My girls were born at 27weeks. A has been sitting for about a month now....actually she crawls and stands now. V & C still don't but we are working on it.

  • 7 months actual age was when he mastered sitting up unsupported.  He rolled over front to back early, but he didn't master back to tummy until about 6 months actual.

I didn't think my LO would EVER sit unsupported.  Most of the other babies in daycare were doing it around 6 months, and my LO would still flop over after a minute (and then laugh).

It seems like his physical development happens in clusters. He scooted and army crawled for over a month.  The week he turned 9 months, he just crawled off - and in the same week he started pulling up from the floor, cruising, and climbed up half of our stairs!  Good lord, I couldn't baby proof fast enough ha ha.

  • My LO will be 6 mos this week (4 mos adjusted) and could sit unsupported for short periods of time at 4 mos old but has regressed to not being able to do it at all now, which worries me Tongue Tied He is developing more at the rate of his adjusted age so I hope it will come back to him soon.
  • She was able to sit up unassisted a little before 9 months actual/ 6 adjusted. Started "army crawling" about 3 weeks ago, just started to "regular" crawl this week. She also started to pull up to standing and go from sitting to crawling, crawling to sitting, etc about 2 weeks ago. No sign of walking any time soon.

  • Mine were 34 weekers. DS sits unsupported and has since around 6 months actual. DD doesn't, she will sit supported with the boppy or propped up against a chair. DD rolls both ways, & DS doesn't roll either way. Our pedi isn't concerned at all.

    They are 7 months actual.

  • My kids were 25 weekers and first sat unassited when they were 10 1/2 months actual and 7 1/2 months adjusted. I honestly though they would NEVER do it. I wouldn't worry just yet!

  • DD didn't get her balance until close to 10 months. She would sit assisted, even though she would rather wiggle and lay down. She rolled all over the place, but didn't master crawling and sitting until right around 11 months. She is now having balance issues with walking, hopefully, not for too much longer though.
  • You just explained our LO perfect. He will sit in front of my on the floor and play but when I let go he wiggles himself down to the floor. He's rolling both ways now and it seems as though he would rather be doing that. Thanks ladies for all the info, hopefully he'll start sitting on his own soon!
