Anybody else feel ripped off...(NTR)

When you take your car to the mechanic? DH took his car to a Subaru dealership for an 80,000 mile tune up. The car was running fine-no issues- but DH and FIL wanted to take it in for the "recommended 80,000 mile tune up" blah. They estimated $6,600 for a full tune up plus extra services they say are needed. The car itself only cost $7,000!!  When DH got the estimate he said that he would call them back i.e. told them not to do anything to the car yet.

DH just called them to tell them that he was coming to pick the car up. They said that the car was all pulled apart for the services that they started, wait..what? I'm pissed.

Does anyone here own a Subaru Forester '01 or around then? If so what did it cost to have it serviced. I think $6,600 is ridiculous for a car with only 88,000 miles on it. We're going to get an estimate at another mechanic (not a dealership). I'm so mad that they started doing the services without our OK.

That's how my day started, hope your day started on a better note!

  • Report them to the bbb, blast them on twitter, contact subaru headquarters

A "tune up" shouldn't be a complete car overhaul

  • The same thing happened to us with a Jeep dealership. They said that when you sign the paper to have your car looked at you are consenting to service and the charged us. It was a little over $300 so I didn't want to waste the time fighting and we just paid.

For several thousand, I think I would threaten small claims court.

  • These types of mechanics and car dealerships piiss me right the fuvck off with how stupid they think some of us are. A $6,600 tune-up had better come with a whole nother car.

  • NO WAY!!! They are ripping you off!!!! Do not pay them. Do not let them perform a service. If anything is wrong w/ your car tell them you are calling the cops. My mom took her car in and gave her a quote she didn't like and then they told her it wouldn't start. She stood her ground and they "fixed it" for free and she went on her way.

  • Wow i would be pissed too. That sounds shaddy. I took my car to teh Honda dealership for an oil change and they gave a me a very long list of what services they recommended but i choose to not have them done.

However my car started stalling as I drove off. I was running late for an appointment so i kept going. Then my car just flat out DIED. It would not starts at all. I had to have my car towed and since they had told me the battery should eb replaced soon i took it to a mechanic i know and had him check it. He said the battery was fine and teh car drove ok.

The next day it died agian so i take it back to the dealer and in they "inspection" they loosed something which caused my car to keep turning off. I was so pissed but felt bad for the poor guy who was new. That si the only time they will be getting a break. Sorry rambling just wanted to shary my crappy dealer service story

The same thing happened to us with a Jeep dealership. They said that when you sign the paper to have your car looked at you are consenting to service and the charged us.

While this is true. that piece of paper I sign also states what sort of service I am getting. and anytime, they found something wrong with the car that was beyond what that service should include, they always called us before doing it.

Yes, the paper I sign always has the service and a cost estimate. Whenever the mechanic calls with a list of things to fix, I ask about each item and the cost. I get them to tell me what's wrong, how they know it's wrong, whether it's a "need to" fix or "should fix soon" or just cosmetic, the potential cost, etc. I write it all down and ask my dad (who knows a lot about cars). Often, the mechanic will help cross things off a costly list that can wait. (Air filters, for example, seem to be suggested more frequently than necessary.)

After 80,000 miles, it's common to have the various rubber belts start to dry out and need replacement. Some of those things can be expensive due to labor costs.

If they started the work without your husband's consent, you should definitely raise hell. At the very least, they need to offer a deep discount. I'm not sure I'd pay $6600 in maintenance for an 11-year-old car with 80k miles. Like someone said, you could get an entire car for that.

    2) The dealership ALWAYS charges very high.

Not always true. I have called around for specific repair services and found the dealership to have the best pricing by far on more than one occasion. Also, in my experience, they do the best and most reliable work because they want you to come back and buy the same make of car (i.e., a Honda dealership wants you to decide your Honda performed well, so you'll buy another one next time).

That said, this particular dealership sounds sketchy for starting work without your consent. I don't think it would hurt to call around for pricing.

  • I always prefer independent mechanics over dealerships.  The one I use is super nice and goes over everything with me before it's done to my car and I have to approve every service.  Shop around a bit and find a good mechanic because it's totally worth it.

  • I have a 99 Forester and never paid that much for a tune-up. I think the most I've paid on repairs were around $2K and that hurt enough. I've already put more into the car than I paid for it over time but I certainly wouldn't drop it all at once.

ETA my car has double the amount of miles as yours does. I bought it at 93K and it probably could use a great tune-up but I can't justify the cost now since the car's 13 years old and we'd rather not drop big sums into it at this point. I just keep up basic maintenance, oil, tires, belts, brakes, and pray it doesn't die on me until we're ready for something newer. lol

  • I drive a Subaru and have the extended warranty so I get all my work done at the dealer.  I have looked at the prices (posted) for the various recommended services and the most expensive one was $995. (I think it was the 75,000 mile one). Subarus last forever, unless you or a previous owner ignored all services and the car was driven hard, it should never cost that much.  They must be wanting to replace damn near everything, brakes, transmission, etc.  Get a second opinion!
