Trouble TTC

completely different SA results

DH had two SAs with completely different results. I am super confused about what the cause of this could be. I don't think he was sick three months ago. I can't come up for any explanation for the difference.

First SA: 3/6

Count: 31.4 million

Motility: 24%

Morph: 5%

The comments for this one said the results were severely abnormal.

Second SA: 3/19

Count: 57.7 million

Motility: 57%

Morph: 6%

The comments for this one said the results were mildly abnormal (because of the morph).

So...any ideas? Both had three days of abstinence.

Re: completely different SA results

  • Looks like the first one was a fluke. It could have been anything from hot showers, an infection he was fighting and didn't know about, sexual arousal, or basically anything Obviously, he should have a 3rd to confirm the good news.

Why have 2 SAs within 2 weeks of each other to begin with? That's the strangest part to me.

  • Should it not have been done that way? They said the first one was abnormal and he needed a repeat. I assumed it was just to verify that the first one was correct. There were no treatments.

That's also what my RE did.

I think for the most part they wait for at least a month or two to re-do a SA though. Just incase your H was sick or something recently and that's what they suspect was causing the bad results, they wouldn't want to do another one before the effected sperm was gone.

However, I'm far from an expert on this. Huh?

  • Thanks, Jessi. I didn't think about that. Now that I think about it, he was sick last month. But that shouldn't affect his sperm yet, should it?
  • Honestly, I'm not sure if you would see the effects of him being sick a month ago yet. I suppose it could. But, I bet Maggie would have more info on that than I do.

  • There was a big difference in DH's first one and his second one about a month and a half apart. No real advice except maybe a third to be the tie breaker.

  • Being sick can affect the sperm for up to 3 months. Not just starting 3 months later. There really is no way to know for sure with one bad SA, but I'd assume that it was from him being sick. Hopefully the 3rd shows a normal result too (anything above 4% strict morph is normal although not every lab uses those standards).

  • This sounds similar to our experience.  We did our two SAs about 2-3 wks apart because they didn't say not to.  The results were not as different as your but they were enough for our Uro to want a third tie breaking SA done.  The third one came back right in the middle of the first two so he's now on Clomid.  I hope you get some answers.

  • Thanks, y'all. I have my HSG tomorrow so I will ask the RE about doing another SA and if he thinks we need to wait longer this time.
