I have a "pincher" please help!!

So my DD is a pincher.  I think she is doing it to sooth herself but it hurts and I need tips on how to get her to stop.  It usually happens as she is trying to fall asleep or when she snuggles.  She would do it when I was breast feeding her and my boobs were black and blue!!

Since I've stopped breast feeding, she is doing it to anyone who is holding her.  My mom, my DH, no one is safe!  Any tips for getting her to stop? I've tried redirecting her and covering up but she just finds a way to get her little hands under clothes and blankets to pinch away.

(Just to clarify it's the upper area of my chest above the bra line and sometimes the face and neck.  She has even gotten the, super sensitive, back side of the upper arm.) Please help!!!

  • Have you tried getting her to hold different things?  My ds did this and I finally figured out it was the feel that he was looking for.  He did the same thing to me when I nursed so much that I gave up nursing at 6 weeks.  We tried plastic rings, fuzzy blankets etc.  FINALLY I found a silky blanket that he latched onto.  I then dawned on me my nursing bras were silky. It was something about him clinching his thumb and forefinger together.  As a toddler he would find a "silky" anywhere even if it meant him putting his pajamas on backwards and rubbing the tags.  To this day and he's 9 he still finds a silky when hes asleep.

  • I have one too!!  Even still at almost 8 months - worst part is we bed share and he likes to find the nipple he isn't currently using and grab hold....OW!!!  I have to hold his 'wandering' hand while I'm nursing him now and let him curl around my fingers.  He's non  stop motion - feet and hands - but the pinching - OW OW OW (although it's kind of funny to me when he finds DH's tender underarms...I can't help but laugh since I'm usually the victim!)

Thanks Moma! Good idea with the silky. I've tried giving her small stuffed animals but nothing silky. I will try this!

Yikes not the nipples! I'm lucky she's stayed away from those!

  • No advice, but I can commiserate, though it's more nipping with teeth rather than pinching (though DS does this too sometimes).  Great idea about giving him something to hold!  I have teeth marks on my shoulders (there's not much meat there... ow!) and find random scratches places.  And then there's nursing too... I always say "no biting..." or "no pinching..." and pull him away and try to redirect.  What else can one do???  I just hope he'll grow out of it before he starts biting or pinching at daycare!

  • I'm assuming it is your younger daughter you're talking about? That's tough since she's just a baby. 11 months is old enough to start registering 'no'. Maybe when she does it say 'no' and give her a sad face so she associates the two???

If it was your older daughter I was going to say- I'd pinch her back! Haaha! I've watched kids at 2yrs old that were pinchers and while I couldn't do it (I am a PT child care provider and would never cross that line with one else's kids) I always thought their parents should have.
