Some babywearing questions...

I used to wear DD often in the summer but once I went back to work in September, I stopped. We wear her if we go walking but that's about it. I really want to start wearing her more often so for those of you who are avid babywearers, a few questions (Warning: some of these questions are probably bordering on dumb):

1.Is it too late to start wearing DD more often?

2. How often do you wear LO? Daily? Weekly?

3. What do you usually do while wearing? Chores? Run errands? Eat?

4. What kind of carrier do you have? We have a Bjorn that DH uses and a Moby that I used when DD was itty bitty. I'm now considering getting a Mei Tai.

5.  When does LO play? How often do you let LO out of the carrier so they can play with toys?

Thank you!

  • 1.Is it too late to start wearing DD more often?

    I don't think so!

    2. How often do you wear LO? Daily? Weekly?

A couple of times a week, sometimes daily

    3. What do you usually do while wearing? Chores? Run errands? Eat?

Clean the kitchen, vacuum, go for a walk, errands.  At the grocery store or Target she likes to sit in the cart, but other errands like the library or post office I wear her.

    4. What kind of carrier do you have? We have a Bjorn that DH uses and a Moby that I used when DD was itty bitty. I'm now considering getting a Mei Tai.

I have a beco gemini and a ring sling from sleeping baby productions.  I love them both!  I use the back carry on the beco a lot now for chores and longer hikes/walks, or the front (facing in) carry for walks.  I like the ring sling for quick trips like running into the bank and also sometimes when I am cooking or cleaning up the kitchen.

    5.  When does LO play? How often do you let LO out of the carrier so they can play with toys?

Most of the time if we are just hanging out at home, she is on the floor playing and crawling around.  I wear her at home when I need to do things and can't watch her.  Or if I feel like we need some extra snuggle time. :)

  • 1.Is it too late to start wearing DD more often? No, not at all! If you wore your DD before she may be missing it.

    2. How often do you wear LO? Daily? Weekly? I wear DS whenever possible. I also work part time so my baby wearing is also limited. I wear him whenever he is fussy and wants to be held and I need to get housework done. We also wear when I grocery shop or go to the store. If it is a quick stop I use my ring sling. Which is also made by Sleeping Baby Production (Amazing WAHM!)

    3. What do you usually do while wearing? Chores? Run errands? Eat? All of this... except Eat. We usually bring him down to sit in a highchair and eat with us.

    4. What kind of carrier do you have? We have a Bjorn that DH uses and a Moby that I used when DD was itty bitty. I'm now considering getting a Mei Tai. I'm more of a wrap enthusiast and enjoy wrapping the most out of all of our carriers. We use my ring sling for quick trips to stores, but I mostly do Front Wrap Cross Carry or a Double Hammock. I recently received a shorty wrap size 4 (3.6m) that I use for quick back wrap trips. It is easy to do a quick Ruck Sack in it. A Mei Tai is a great carrier. I have not personally tried one, but would really like to try one to see if we like it. I hear great things about them though. We also just received a Boba 3g that fits very nicely on me. I had issues with our Ergo and sold it because I am very short and I like my baby high on my back. The Boba allows DS to be high on my back and it is nice to have the just 'buckle' and go feature, but I am a wrapper at heart and will most likely be using the wrap more then our SSC(Soft Structure Carrier)

    5.  When does LO play? How often do you let LO out of the carrier so they can play with toys? He is very mobile. He is also very independent also. To my surprised! I was told that he would be very attached if I kept carrying him around all the time... but I didn't listen. He plays on the floor when I am relaxing or bumping. He also plays on the floor if he doesn't want to be wrapped and I have housework to do... like fold the laundry.

Your post makes me feel guilty... I have a lot invested in babywearing and I don't think I get to wear him enough to justify my stash... Crying

  • 1.Is it too late to start wearing DD more often? I'm not really sure. I don't know anyone that uses a carrier that didn't start using it when their LO was very small. Maybe you could get one to try out that has a very liberal return policy.

    2. How often do you wear LO? Daily? Weekly? Almost every day for at least a short while

    3. What do you usually do while wearing? Chores? Run errands? Eat? I wear her for almost all errands to free up my 2 hands. She is much more calm in the carrier than in her stroller. I find that I can get her in and out of the Ergo more quickly/easily than getting the stroller in/out of my car, even though I have a very easy stroller that just pops open (City Mini).

    4. What kind of carrier do you have? I have 2; the Ergo and a Baby Hawk Mei Tei. I quickly learned that using the Ergo along with the infant insert was WAY too hot to use in FL last summer when DD was born, so I bought the Mei Tei and used it for the first few months instead. I've been using only the Ergo for the past few months b/c I feel like the Mei Tei "gives" too much and I have to adjust the straps more than I'd like to now that DD is an older infant and is more heavy.

I don't feel comfortable enough slinging her over my shoulder and back to get her into the back carry position on my own yet, so I usually just wear her in the front carry position. I'd really like to get used to wearing her on my back sometimes though b/c I think she'd enjoy the different view.

    5.  When does LO play? How often do you let LO out of the carrier so they can play with toys? DD is on the floor to play whenever we're at home. I only really wear her at home if she's cranky and won't let me put her down (like if she takes poor naps one day), or if I have something to get done that requires my full attention. For vacuuming, I'm lucky b/c she loves to crawl and follow me around while I do that. :)

    Happy Babywearing!

Aww I don't want you to feel guilty :-( I think it is well-known on this board that you are a babywearing pro! I was hoping you would respond to my post and you did :-) I wish I would have stuck with wearing her. But better late than never! I love the idea of wearing her outside of the house and I definitely want to start doing that.  I'll have to look into slings. Last night I was trying to juggle her while packing my lunch. Not easy! I told DH that I'm fed up with trying to watch her and get stuff done. I want to wear her again! Thank you for your advice!

  • 1..Is it too late to start wearing DD more often? I don't think so, just give it a try! Wear her in whatever you have some, to see if she'll tolerate it. Give it more than a few minutes, take LO on a good long walk (lots of babies fuss standing still being worn but love it when mama is moving!)

    2. How often do you wear LO? Daily? Weekly? Probably 2-3x a week, more when she's teething (I work though, so I'm only home awake with her for 2-3 hours on weekdays)

    3. What do you usually do while wearing? Chores? Run errands? Eat?  out of the house I wear her running errands, out at DH's softball games if it's late, so she can sleep, at the house I wear her when she follows me around crying to be picked up. I do dishes, laundry, pick up the house, etc while I wear her.

    4. What kind of carrier do you have? Ergo when we're out, it's easier to put on and gives us both a little better support. Moby usually at home because it's easier for me to nurse in while I'm walking around. I usually just pull down one side of my top and let her snack as she wants while I'm doing chores.

    5.  When does LO play? How often do you let LO out of the carrier so they can play with toys? She plays WAY more than she is worn! I only wear her when I'm walking around and she's doing the fussy want to be held thing. If she's content playing, I'd rather she explore the world and crawl and play. She's also in daycare, so of course she plays without being worn all day.

  • Thank you all for your responses! I'm super excited about wearing DD again!!! I was envisioning letting her play at home but wear her anytime we were out or when I needed to get something done and couldn't watch her and I'm glad to see that this is what many of you do. Wish I would have gone back to wearing sooner...hopefully DD will like it :-)
