Preemies

may need to deliver at 32 weeks or so

hi girls...

i am looking for some support.  i am pregnant with twins and my growth scan today was a little scary.  baby A (boy) is right on track at 3 lbs 3 oz but baby B (girl) was only at 2.5 and i guess that is smaller than they want at this point and her placental blood flow is a tiny bit compromised.  so now along with steroid shots, i see the docs 2x a week to see what's going on.  if things don't change or improve they will want to get them out bc she will do better in the NICU than in the womb.

i assume these weights, while small are OK.  and i hope they only improve.  let me know your thoughts!!

thanks!!

  • Hi, I just had DS on Feb 1 @ 31wks, 3 days. They thought that he was measuring 3 lbs, 1 oz, but ended up being 3 lbs 11oz. We were in the Nicu for 44 days. Now almost 2 months later, we are so happy at home. He weighed in today 7 lbs 10oz & is so happy & healthy. Good luck to you. T&p heading your way!

  • Same thing here but not compromised blood flow, my kids were just small. Boy was SGA born in 12 percentile, Girl who was baby B born in 4th at 3lb 4oz stats below in sig. They are home and healthy, spent a little over 3 weeks in NICU. I can answer any questions you have but have to go feed my two peanuts <: Very similar story to you though!

  • I answered your post on multiples.  Hopefully some preemie moms with similar gestational age can chime in on their experiences.  Best wishes it sounds like you are in good hands.

I had my DD at 31 weeks 4 days due to lack of growth as well (IUGR) I know it's scary and overwhelming, we have been measuring behind since 20 week u/s but it was only by 4 days, then 28 week went to 2 weeks, then I was put in hospital, for other issues and they did another and she dropped to under the 10% for growth and was measuring 6 weeks behind. My dr kept telling me at some point she may be better out then in, it was hard for me to understand that but I trusted him completely. Well let me tell you our DD has proved that! She has gained a pound since birth, 3/6/12, and this was after losing in the first few days to a week, so technically she has gained over a pound! She was born at 2 lbs 6 oz, dropped to 2 lbs 3 oz ( may have gone lower but it was scaring me so I told nurses to only tell us weight when it started going up) as of yesterday she was 3 lbs 6 oz and has gained that in 2 weeks!! Also the steroid shots helped us, she has never needed breathing support since birth, but every baby is different. I know my dr wife had twins and the same situation happened to her, one twin was smaller and she delivered early and he has very healthy 5 year old twin girls who are now very similar in size!! I hope this helps, this board is awesome for support, as I am still a newbie NICU mommy!

  • I had my DS at exactly 32 weeks...I had IUGR and compromised blood flow like you, and was developing pre-eclampsia.  I had the steroid shots at 31 weeks, and he was 2 lbs. 9 oz. when he was born (they estimated 2.8 so they were pretty accurate).  He came out screaming his head off and needed no breathing assistance at all thankfully.  He spent 40 days in the NICU and has been home now for 10 days and now weighs 5 lbs. 1 oz. and is doing great!

Good luck and hope all goes well with their delivery!
