Should we return this Step 2 kitchen? Or is it worth it?

My daughter is 18 months old. I have been wanting to buy her a kitchen for a while now. She loves electronics of all kinds and this one has all the beeps, whizzes, and sizzles. But it is one of the most expensive kitchens. It's regularly priced at $229, but I found it on sale at Toys R Us for $179. They only had 1 left in stock and don't offer rain checks because it's a "clearance" item, so I bought it and figured if I get buyers remorse, I could always return it and get something cheaper.

I'm on the fence about keeping it. It IS a good deal at $179... but is $179 for a kids kitchen too expensive? She is 18 months... my son is 5 (but developmentally a little behind so I KNOW he would love it too). And my oldest is 7 but would probably still try to play with it.  I just don't know. Do you think it's worth it? Would you buy this for your child? Or, do you have it already? If you have it do you love it?

Here is the link on amazon:

It's sitting in our house in the HUGE box until I decide whether to keep or return and get something cheaper.

TIA for any thoughts/advice!!

  • I have a small house, so I would not buy a kitchen that big. Tough call; it looks cool, but my son didn't play with his much ... I bought him a small kidcraft one from Woot.com for $100. Didn't regret the purchase later when he became bored.

I think overall, I would get something small.

  • We spent more than that on a wooden one and it has been worth every penny - we bought it when DS was 2.5 and now at almost 6.5 he still uses it every week.  I vote you keep the Step 2 :-)
  • We got one for dd1 at that age and she and dd2 still play with it almost daily.  DD1 is 5.5 yo
  • Keep it it is adorable! My friend bought it a couple urs ago and her kids still love it! they are now 7 and 4
  • We almost bought that one!

  • Keep it till Easter and it's a gift to all the kids! DD is 4 and still loves to play with the  kitchen. DS is around 20 months and loves to hide things in the cabinets. They get a lot of play out of ours and totally worth every penny.   :)

Dh assembled it last night and she has been playing with it for 2 hours now - ever since she woke up! My 5 year old is playing with her. My 7 year old is claiming he is "helping" his sister play but I know he's playing too. The scene of all three of them playing together makes this buy worth it to me!!! :)

  • We have that exact one and really like it (and we spent a lot more than the deal you got).  Everything wipes right off of it.  The buttons on the oven/microwave and dishwasher are always a hit.  And the stove makes cool noises when you put pots (boiling noise) and pans (sizzling noise) on it.  Here, everyone enjoys playing with it from my 5yo to my 1yo.  I would keep it =)

Word of warning.  It is sort of a PITA to put together.  Give yourselves plenty of time.

  • We got that exact kitchen for DD when she was 18 months. It's big, but I'm glad we got it because 2 kids can play in it at once, there's room for all of her play food in it, and it's held her interest for 3.5 years. Keep it!

  • I have a small wooden one and spent more than that.  It's a great purchase....especially for that price.  Kids love it ......it's definitely a keeper.
  • We have this one, and it's been worth it. We got it almost 5 years ago, so I can't remember how much we paid. DD2 has actually played with it more than DD1, but they both use it.
