Sleeping on belly

So I'm sure this topic has been brought up soooo many times but my daughter is 3 months old and the only way she will sleep by herself is on her belly! I am okay with her napping throughout the day on her belly when I can keep an eye on her but everytime I try to lay her on her back or even her side, she wakes right up. Night time she HAS to sleep with us on her side or she wont sleep at all because I wont put her in her bassinet on her belly at night. She has good head control and has rolled over twice but not much since then. Have any of you moms let baby sleep on their belly at night without much experience rolling over?

Re: Sleeping on belly

  • We have been putting DD to sleep on her belly for about a month, maybe? SHe has good head control, she can roll over when she wants, I don;t remember if she could roll over when we started putting her to sleep on her belly. She has been able to do "push-up" really well.

  • we had to switch to his belly around 3  months as well, he wouldnt stay sleep! the 1s night we did he slept for 5 hours. we were the ones who kept waking up checking on him lol. but alll he does is switch is head position but we have no problems. we just his bed extremely tight and flat. no toys or extra stuff. hes almost 6 months now and still sleeps like a baby!
  • Thanks. I think I am going to try it tonight. I am going to tuck my pillow case tightly into her bassinet mattress so she has some familiar mommy scent just in case :)

Was he swaddled when you started putting him on his belly? I'm contemplating trying this since we have a monitor. We're desperate for more sleep!

Please don't try the tummy with the swaddle. They need their arms to lift their bodies enough to turn their heads.

Trying tummy sleeping may be your way to wean from the swaddle though so good luck.

No no, I never would! I meant it as "Was your LO previously swaddled before transitioning to tummy sleep?" Ha, I'm not that stupid!

  • DS has been a tummy sleeper since 3 weeks.  Previously he had been swaddled when he slept in his little Fisher-Price vibrating chair but around 3 weeks he was busting out of it and became a restless sleeper.  We use the AngelCare monitor so I feel better about allowing him to sleep on his tummy.  DD was also a tummy sleeper and we did the same with her.

  • We tried letting her sleep on her belly last night and she slept for 7 straight hours! I can't believe she did so well not being right next to me all night.. She actually slept better I think. I did wake up a lot to check on her though... :) Thanks!
