Consignment stores

Dh and I are at the very initial steps of considering opening a franchised children's consignment store.  I'm wondering if all of you would be willing to answer some questions as we try to do some research on the idea.

1) Do you ever shop at children's consignment stores?

2) If you don't stop at children's consignment stores, why not?

3) If you do shop there, what store?  and how often do you go?

4) What do you like best about the consignment store you shop at?

5) What do you like the least?

6) Any advice on things you would like to see in one of these stores?

Thanks for your input.  I appreciate it.

Re: Consignment stores

  • I LOVE consignment shopping for the kiddos -- esp. for gear.  I can't stand to pay full price for something they will only use a few months.

I frequent Once upon a Child stores in my area.  Some are nicer than others . .. part of this has to do with the area of town they are in, if you know what I mean.  I like that they are always organized & clean and that they keep things together (i.e. all the exersaucers are in one area, the sizes of clothes are together and even organized by color in most stores).

I can't really think of any complaints . . . sometimes I go there looking for one specific thing (i.e. right now I'm on the hunt for a walker for DD), but that is just the luck of what they have in stock.

I have only sold things to OUAC once and it was a pretty good experiece.  I could have made more selling it at my twins sale, but that's OK.

    Good luck to you!!!

  • Oooh, awesome! I'll make sure my sister shops there if you open it. (If it's in Virginia, I mean. Since she lives there.)

    1. yes

    2. n/a

    3. Kid2Kid and Children's Orchard; every once in a while, when I'm looking for something.

    4. I like Kid2Kid because they have a lot of stuff other than just clothes.

    5. The clothes sometimes seem strangely overpriced. Like, not cheap enough to justify buying used clothes.

    6. Like I said, I like Kid2Kid because of all of the non-clothing items they sell. They even sell formula!

  • 1. Most of my daughters' clothes come from consignment stores.

    2. N/A

    3. We shop at Tried But True (which is a local store here in Baltimore) primarily.  I tried Kid to Kid once, and thought it was ok.

    4.  I like the prices and the great condition the clothes and toys are in.

    5.  Our consignment store is a little cramped.

    6. Lots of clothes to choose from.

  • I think that's a great idea and I wish you guys luck!

    1) Do you ever shop at children's consignment stores?  Not a lot in the past but plan to more when the kids are born

    2) If you don't stop at children's consignment stores, why not?  I mostly haven't yet because I didn't know what clothes I needed and I didn't like the other stuff....not the kind of quality I would want to buy

    3) If you do shop there, what store?  and how often do you go? Once upon a child is the one closest to me

    4) What do you like best about the consignment store you shop at?  The cothing prices and hardly worn quality

    5) What do you like the least?  The other stuff is not as good of quality as I would like

    6) Any advice on things you would like to see in one of these stores?  better quality "stuff"

  • 1) Do you ever shop at children's consignment stores?  Yes but not often maybe a few times a year

    2) If you don't stop at children's consignment stores, why not?

    3) If you do shop there, what store?  and how often do you go?  Local thrift store or Once Upom a Baby.  Maybe like 6 times a year

    4) What do you like best about the consignment store you shop at? Price

    5) What do you like the least? Just my opinion but a lot of times the stores seem unorganized and dirty.  I find the price on clothes tend to be a little higher than what I think is reasonable.  Foe instance I see PJ's there that are worn and a little dated which is fine but they are selling them for $3-5.  I can go to Target and get a pack of two for 10.  Not the best quality but it's not like the twins will fit into them next year.

    6) Any advice on things you would like to see in one of these stores? Again my opinion but I don't like to walk into a place that is junky.  The more organized it is the more likely I will spend more time in there.  I think second hand/thrift stores are a GREAT idea and I would love to shop there more but I just hate having to ramble through stuff.  With the economy these days I think people are shopping more at these places.  Not to mention people are becoming more green and shopping at second hand stores. Best of luck to you!

  • 1) Do you ever shop at children's consignment stores?  Yes :) I *heart* them, too, though I've only been twice so far.

    2) If you don't stop at children's consignment stores, why not? N/A

    3) If you do shop there, what store?  and how often do you go? I've been to Once Upon a Child and a small local one, once each.

    4) What do you like best about the consignment store you shop at? OUAC has a bigger selection; the small local one is MUCH more convenient (8 mins away versus 35-40 mins) and has better prices on the stuff they do have.

    5) What do you like the least? OUAC sometimes seems overpriced for used items. The small local store didn't have the best selection.

    6) Any advice on things you would like to see in one of these stores? Double Snap n Go's, lol. ;)

  • 1) Do you ever shop at children's consignment stores? Yes

    2) If you don't stop at children's consignment stores, why not?

    3) If you do shop there, what store?  and how often do you go?  Once Upon A Child - I probably stop in there once a month or so.

    4) What do you like best about the consignment store you shop at? I shop there for toys, gear and dvds.  I've bought a bouncy seat, an exersaucer, Baby Eins. dvds, random toys I could bleech,

    5) What do you like the least? I have a hard time going through their clothes.  Even though they don't take things w/ holes or stains, many of them are really worn and over-priced compared to what you can find at garage sales.  Also, I don't dress my boys in identical outfits but I like them to match...

    6) Any advice on things you would like to see in one of these stores? Not sure why, but why do all consignment shops smell like my grandma's closet?  I don't mind buying second hand and I'd probably do more of it, if it were a little nicer atmosphere.

  • 1. I do buy some of the girls' clothes at consignment shops.

    3. We have one local store that get so much business she's able to be very selective about the clothes she takes.  I will run through maybe once a month or more often if I'm looking for something specific. https://www.piccolinaresale.com/index.iml/childrens_clothing

    4. I love being able to buy cute Ralph Lauren clothes that I would never consider spending that much on new.

    5. The store I frequent is great.  Other stores I've been to aren't organized or have too much stuff shoved on the shelves and in every corner.  Organization is important.

    1) Do you ever shop at children's consignment stores?   Yes- exclusivly for DS's clothing (except onsies).  Other than gifts and some yard sales, it's really the only place I get his clothes!

    3) If you do shop there, what store?  and how often do you go? Milk Money is a chain in this area (N. NJ) - https://www.milkmoneylove.com/ .  There are also some independent ones in my area, "My Best Friend's Closet", "Second Childhood", "The Great & Small Shop".  I probably hit them all up about once every couple months- as DS starts to need more stuff.

    4) What do you like best about the consignment store you shop at?  Expensive name brands at a fraction of the price.  Sale time is great, too! I stock up for the next year.

    5) What do you like the least?  When they price an Old Navy item the same as a Ralph Lauren item - HUH? I can buy ON clothes for that price on sale brand new at the store!  I only buy higher end name brands at consignment- otherwise I can just get stuff on sale elsewhere.

    6) Any advice on things you would like to see in one of these stores?  An area for kids to play is nice (though i rarely use it b/c I shop without my DS).... a bathroom (for us pg moms!)... good sales... good prices.  Don't price things near what I can get them for new on sale at the orig store.

email me at my nest name @att.net if you ever need more input - I think of myself as a professional kid's consignment shopper! And considered opening one up myself in my town- but someone beat me to it last month!! :)

Thanks for your input.  I appreciate it.
