Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Nightmare going to bed now

My DD used to be sooo good about going to bed. No crying at all. In the past week she automatically starts standing & cries. It doesn't usually last too long.

BUT usually she poops so i have to go in and check her about 30 mins later..of course it's when she has calmed down. So as soon as i leave the room it starts up again but if i leave her in poop she either wakes up in the middle of the night then won't go back for hours or wakes up with a diaper rash.

Is this separation anxiety?? I have noticed that sometimes i can't leave the room or go outside cuz she freaks out.

If it is, i hate this stage!!!

Anything i can do to make it smoother? How long does it usually last?

Thanks

Re: Nightmare going to bed now

  • We had a big time sleep regression right around 18 months. It sucked. It could be that, or it could also be SA. The regression for us lasted a good few weeks and now he's back to normal (though in the process he did push his bedtime back a bit).

  • The babies bedtime was 6:30 prior to the time change and I've really noticed that they fight it-play, cry, joke between themselves if we do 6:30 now.  If we wait to 7:00, they are out.

I agree, try putting her down 15 to 20 minutes later and see how it goes....

  • Sounds odd, but maybe it's the poo. lol

DS will fight me on naps tooth and nail if he's getting ready to poop. I'll fight with him, leave him to cry a bit, etc. and then when I get ready to give in, and go get him and find that he pooped. He's all of a sudden getting really sensitive to it and doesn't like having it in his diaper, etc. so there's no way he'd fall asleep with a full diaper.

Maybe it's the same for your kiddo? I have no idea what to do about it, because it really screws with his schedule when this happens, but I can't sleep train that type of thing out of him, kwim?

  • My LO is 19 months and has been doing this for the past few months.  He's never been a great sleeper, but at around 16 months, I used to be able to put him down when he was tired and he would go to sleep.  He is now back to needing me to rock him to sleep and he often wakes up, stands and cries as soon as I put him down.  I can't really leave him to cry because he gets so upset that he always vomits all over the crib and himself.  I know people say to let him CIO, but I can't take the smell of the vomit and I HATE cleaning it.

I'm hoping this will pass.  He barely naps during the day and is refusing to go to sleep until really late- I'm talking 11-11:30. It's crazy!!!!!!!!!!  Since there are other moms on here saying their kids are doing the same, I'll assume it's a phase they go through at this age.  For all of our sakes, I hope it passes quickly. Good luck to all.

Exact same for us. It will get better, just stay consistent.
