Cloth Diapering

for those who use prefolds...

We are planning on going with prefolds and covers for this LO, but today I got to thinking....

I know that since prefolds are cotton they don't wick away the moisture thus LO bottom is exposed to more moisture.  I guess I am concerned about rash issues.  Do you use prefolds without liners or doublers and find that LO doesn't have any more susceptibility to rashes?  Do you always use a liner or a doubler?  Other than frequent changes, any tips you care to share?

Re: for those who use prefolds...

  • We only used a doubler at night, and it was MF inside the prefold.  I didn't have a problem with it (we used to use strictly prefolds).  You can always add a fleece or mesh liner to wick moisture, but my best guess as to why it wasn't an issue is the breathe-ability of cotton.

  • I had the same concern, but it doesn't seem to be a problem. His bum has actually been better since we started using prefolds in addition to pockets.

If I know he will be in a diaper for a while (ON, naps, car rides), I will use a pocket.  But like pp said, you can add absorbency and/or use a fleece liner.

I ussed prefolds exclusively at the beginning, and I never had rash issues due to excess moisture. I only used a fleece liner at night once he started sttn.

  • We've never had any problems with diaper rash. I use CJs butt-er stick if I notice he's a little red, but that's rare. We may need to add a liner once he's sttn, but for now, no problems!

  • Used mostly prefolds and fe pockets for babysitter.  DS never had any type of diaper rash.

  • I see you haven't had the baby yet, so we're talking about beginning stages.  I used prefolds exclusively in the first two months.  The one size diapers don't really fit well until they are about 12 lbs because their little legs are too thin and thus leaking.  In the early stages, they poop so much, i would change every 2 hours or more.  This seems exhausting, but it was nice to know i could reuse the covers before putting in the wash and washing prefolds is so much easier since you can dry them on high and not worry about damage.  Never had a rash with LO until she started going to daycare at 3.5 months and she was in pockets by then.  Didn't use fleece liners or anything.  LO started sttn early (5-6 hrs by 4 weeks).

After you're done with prefolds, you can just use them as inserts for pockets, burp cloths, dust rags...etc.  Can't really use other diapers for anything else.

  • I prefer the prefolds but DH and my mom prefer the AIOs or pockets. I just use a liner with them and she hasn't had a rash yet. I also love that you can use them for many purposes.

  • We've used prefolds for the past 2 1/2 mos without problem with rashes. The biggest problem I have is that my DS is a super wetter and the prefold doesn't always contain his Niagra Falls-ness.
