WWYD: Leaving night-nursing 1yo for 2 nights

DD turns 1 soon and nurses to sleep every night, plus several times throughout the night. We have no plans to wean or even night-wean anytime soon, but in about 6 weeks we have to leave her with DH's parents for 2 nights while we're out of town. She hasn't gone to sleep at bedtime for anyone but me since she was ~6 months old. So - how would you prepare her for this upcoming separation? I'm thinking DH should start handling bedtime a couple of times a week, and considering getting a sitter once or twice who would put her to bed while DH and I go to a movie or something. Anything else? Or would you just skip the "preparation", stick to your usual routine and hope everything goes ok while we're away (which is what DH thinks we should do)?

  • I would probably skip the preparation as long as your inlaws are people you trust to have great patience with an unhappy child.

She might surprise you and be fine, though.

This is what I think too. It is amazing how adaptable they are when Mom isn't around. DD nurses to sleep when I am home, but the nights I work my brother (who babysits) has no issues getting her to bed.

  • I wouldn't worry about it too much. In a completely different environment for bedtime she'll both have an easier time and a harder time no matter what you do. By and large, our son has always slept better for other people than us, even when we nursed to sleep (he stopped that on his own a few months back!).

  • I had to leave DS#2 at 14 months with my parents for one night and was so worried about how he would do.  He was still nursing to go to sleep, at naptime and throughout the night.  He did fine, just fussed for a couple minutes and then fell asleep on his own.

Since then, I have started working about 4 nights/month which doesn't get me home until after bedtime.  DS is still nursing to sleep but when I'm not home, DH is able to get him to sleep with little trouble.

She might surprise you and do better than what you expect.

I would not do anything different, she will be fine:)
