DH and I rent a home from friends of his family. Their daughter, her fiance, and baby boy (same age as DD) live in the in-law suite. Also, one of their friends used to live in the basement. He was 21, and ex-marine, and had tons of guns in the basements... ones I didn't know you could own! For awhile we felt safe, like if someone broke in they better get their butt out quick before he found them. Well, he struggled with depression from the war (sorry, don't know the term) and drank while taking his medication.
Labor Day weekend we were in Philly and we got a call that he shot himself in our basement. It took me a week or two to feel comfortable in our home, but now I am terrified of guns. I didn't mind that he had them or even that the other guy in the house had them too. But now I don't think I could ever let DH think about owning one.
Re: NBR: I am officially TERRIFED of guns (W: potentially disturbing)
you have me in tears. my uncle had PTSD from vietnam and shot himself a few years ago. the worst thing i've ever been through, EVER.
and i, too, am terrified of guns.
Um no, I completely understand how they work. I would of course have been terrified before this if one was shoved in my face... but I never really minded the thought of someone owning them for personal reasons.
uhm. harsh much? guns make me incredibly nervous. because they don;t shoot out rainbows. and obviously you've never known someone to commit suicide.
Why? Because I don't blame the gun, but the person who pulled the trigger?
My aunt killed herself by sitting in a running car in a closed garage. I'm not afraid of cars....
I'd be more afraid of a child finding the gun, and then who do you blame? I wouldn't be blaming the child, thats for sure.
i hate this argument. of course he pulled the trigger, no one is arguing that. but it's a reminder that if anything were to happen accidentally,, it would have disasterous effects.
and btw, cars weren't invented to kill, guns were. i am all for gun ownership and rights, but they still make me nervous.
Proper guns safety is key. Gun safes, trigger locks and guns should always be unloaded. If you want a gun for safety have a gun in one spot and the ammo in another.
way to sound like an ***
yeah, i see no problem with owning guns and responsible gun ownership. they just make me nervous and quesy bc of my experiences.
It's the like the saying "Guns don't kill people. People kill people." And that goes the same for unresponsible people who don't secure their guns while children are present.
DH and I are police officers and have several guns in the home. My DD or DS could never get to them because we have made damn sure that is impossible. I don't feel afraid at all. Just saying.
