  • I think boy. But I also think of a lion roaring... maybe too literal, might just be me.

  • It's a boy name...

I've only heard it as a girl name on Gilmore Girls.

  • I definitely think of boy but don't mind it as a NN on a girl.
  • I think of Rory Culkin or the girl from Gilmore Girls. I always thought it was a cute nn for Lorelei. I think it works for either gender, but I prefer it as just a nn for something a little more sophisticated. One day these kids will be adults and we're really not doing them any favors by giving them inflexibly cute names.

Yeah, I think her name was Lorelai. The same as her mom.

It also makes me think of the boy in 8 Simple Rules.

  • I go straight to Gilmore Girls where one of the leads was called Rory so I think girl all the way

  • I knew a girl growing up named Rory, but there are some famous male athletes now with that name.  So I guess both.  More male than female.  But it's one of those really ethnic sounding names to me - Irish or Gaelic maybe?  It's cute :)

  • I always go back to my first association with the name...it is of the actor in both 90s classics Dazed and Confused and Empire Records. I don't know his Ln but his fn always stood out during credits. I'm sure he has been in more things since then.

  • It's a boys name and it's awful.

  • I love this name - it's #1 on our boys' list. I've always thought of it as a boy's name.

And now, I apparently must go watch Gilmore Girls, because I appear to be the only person on the planet who hasn't ever seen it.

  • All boy- I love it! I have never met a girl with this name before and GG was always weird to me because I couldn't get over the fact that Rory Gilmore had a boy's name.

I think of it as a girl's name because of Gilmore Girls, but I also think it's so hard to say!  Maybe I'm the only one who feels that way, though.  I can't say the word "rural" either without thinking really hard about it.  :)
  • Well, ever since seeing Gilmore Girls I thought girl but now with Rory McIlroy becoming such a popular and well known golfer I think boy.

Honestly, it could go either way.

  • My goodness, I'm really shocked to see that the board is pretty well split on the gender of this name! Usually they pick one side.

For me, it's very masculine. It makes me think of "roar," like lions roaring. Not that girls can't roar, but it just sounds like a man's name to me. Historically, too, it has been, and I'm definitely not a fan of claiming boy names for girls.

  • The only people I have known named Rory have been male (three of them).  Just recently I had a friend name her daughter Aurora, and they call her Rory sometimes.

  • I've never seen Gilmore Girls nor have I ever met a Rory IRL. I was thinking boy but so many votes for girl/unisex has me intrigued.

I think BOY, but my brother's name is Rory!

I will say it's a name (well, part of a name) we're considering if we have a girl, though.  It has nothing to do with the trend or Gilmore Girls, it's in honor of my brother.

    Girl; nickname for Aurora.

If I ever am blessed with a baby girl I will name her Aurora.  Rory would be a nickname.  I have loved the name Aurora for years because to me it sounds very earthy, classic, sophisticated.  I am hispanic and it was a popular name in the early 1900's in hispance culture.  Also, Rory is the name of one of the Kennedy's.
