Baby Names

Naming baby after sibling?

My sister and I are pretty close so I thought it would be neat to maybe use her first name if I have a girl. Her name is Farrah. She said she thinks it would be cool but my older sister doesn't like the idea. Thoughts and opinions please. Annndd if you like the idea what would you do for the middle names? Yes names it has to be 2, family thing for at least one girl to have 2 middle names.

Also while we're at it what do you think of these girl names. (Note: I SUCK at naming a baby)

Harper Nicole Elise

Abigail Kate...(needs another middle name)

Farrah

Emily

Jillian (would go by Jill).

Well that is all I have come up with so far.

I think it's kind of weird, so I wouldn't use it as a first name. It seems really confusing, and what if she wants to use the name for her own kid? My favorite of your names is Jillian. Emily is also nice.

She doesn't plan on using it. I may do it as a middle name. I don't know. I just don't want to think later in life "I should have went with Farrah" My mom is always telling me she should have named me Wendy, but she didn't because my dad's sister is a Wendy. Who knows it is still very up in the air.

  • I think it's weird, and I LOVE my identical twin sister more than anyone in the world (well, maybe not DH, but it's close), but would never use her first name for my daughter's. I have considered using a variation of it for a mn though (Maren or Kathryn since her name is Karen).

  • Is it possible your older sister doesn't like it because, well, she is getting left out of this equation?

From an objective standpoint, I have to agree with pp's - it's a little odd. I love my twin sister (another twin here!) and younger sister, however, if I were to honor them with a child's name, I would pick variants of their names, not their exact first name. Like my little sister's middle name is Rose, so maybe I would use that. Or my twin sister's name is Elizabeth and there are many variations of that. I would, however, worry about showing favoritism to one sister over the other (and I usually don't worry about that stuff, but with siblings, it can get tricky).

  • My sister chose to name her first DD Elizabeth Margaret and call her Beth.  Most people call her Bethy.  My name is Beryl Elizabeth, but I have gone by Beth my entire life so people assume she was named after me.  My sister claimed at the time that it was actually to honor our grandma and her DH's grandma.   I'm ok with it either way.  It isn't confusing and I like the name Beth too, but would never name my own child Beth.  Immediate family usually says "Bethy" or "little Beth"
  • I plan to name my next child (if i ever have one) with my sisters middle name nicole. also her first name (if its a her) will be annalynne which will be named after her sister (kaileyann) and my middle name lin. So i like variations of relatives names very much. my daughters name is kaileyann june phillips. Kailey because we liked it ann after a close relative that passed on, june after my grandma who died when i was pregnant. her name was originally only going to be kailey ann. i wish i would of thought of annalynne sooner because my grandmothers name was linda, so it would of still worked. Oh well i love my daughters name anyway.

Hmmm. I would never name any of my daughters after my husband's sisters (like your mom wanted to do). I don't like them, and they are pretty cruel and reallllly self centered.

As for the naming of your child after your own sister, I think it's kinda cute. I think for a middle name, you should use something that is simpler, just because Farrah is a different name in itself.

    Good luck!

  • We used the name of my identical twin (another twin) as our DD's middle name. She is also my only sister, so didn't have to "play favorites". Her first name is not a family name at all...just a name we liked for her.

Good luck! We also changed our name choices several times right up to the day I gave birth!

  • If yuo are using your sister's name, I recommend making it a middle name.

I like Abigail.   What about Abigail Kate Farrah?

  • I like honoring family with the MN. I don't like passing on a FN - give the child their own FN.

    GL deciding!

  • I have a childhood friend who was named after her mother's twin sister. They were both Myla. Aunt Myla and Myla.

First of all thanks for ya'll opinions. If I use it I may do it as a middle name. Or I may just not use it. I have a hard time pairing up names with Farrah!

The extra middle names is a tradition in my family. Every Aunt that had a daughter named at least on of their girls with 2 middle names. I happen to be the one with the extra name out of my sisters.

  • If you are super close, you and baby will probably be around her quite a bit.  It could get confusing.  I think using it as a mn is better.
