FTM Advice on Baby coming early.....

I just wanted to throw this out there because i see alot of posts from FTMs that say they know their baby is coming early.  Trust me....ive been there and i did the same thing!! :)

DS was due May 19th, but i was so big and uncomfortable in April that i just "knew" he was gonna be early.  I was so convinced that i even would tell people that my due date was closer to the 5th. Plus i had dialated to 2cm by May 1st, so that got me thinking that my intuition was correct!  This is why many doctors will not do an internal too early because it gives moms false hope that dilation means labor will start right away.

Guess what happened on the 5th?  Nothing.  Guess what happened a week later?  Nothing.  I finally went into labor on the 17th (still at 2cm) and he was born on the 19th, his due date exactly. I can tell you that the 2 weeks before he was due was the longest part of the pregnancy EVER!!! I had done such a good job at convincing my mind he was coming early, that i actually would feel like he was late after the 5th.

I just wanted to pass along this advice because with this one, i am sticking to my due date and not even thinking about an early baby. :)  i wish i would have done it differently the first time.  GL!!!

Re: FTM Advice on Baby coming early.....

  • The only reason I think I may go early is because I deal with high blood pressure and my OB has mentioned that I may end up with pre-e and there's a chance she won't want me to carry past 37 weeks.

But I totally pulled the "I think I may go early card" before the blood pressure issues. :) Must be the excitement...

  • i was scared i'd go into labor early, but only because my husband has been out of town 3 times in the last 3 weeks!

now i'm just hoping i go into labor at least on time, because i feel like my daughter is getting too big to fit inside me anymore!

  • As a mom expecing # 4 - I can kinda agree with you- however my 1st was born day after due date, my second was a week late and my third was 2 weeks early.

Another thing I would add - is the dr DOESNT know when your baby will come - truly - they are guesses.  Unless its a schedule c-section even an induction there is no time frame they know- FYI

  • I would agree that unless there are very specific reasons why you and your doctor feel you may go early, most moms I've ever talked to where much closer to their due date then they wanted to be since they were hoping to go early. Of course there are exceptions to every rule and I'm sure there will be some stories popping up of moms that were surprised or correct about being early.

  • I have to agree. I went 5 days late with DS1 even after having PTL since 26wks. The only reason DS2 came at 39w3d is b/c I had a rcs.

  • Funny, I am just assuming that I will go late so I have scheduled to work right up until my due date. Why waste precious maternity leave if I don't have to?
  • I had a very strong feeling my son would come early, and he did. He was born a week early. But I didn't tell anyone I had a different due date. I wanted to set myself up for on-time, or even late. The hope is nice, but reality is more important.

  • Thanks for the advice but I'm that woman that has already convinced herself that LO is coming early... I know I'm in for it if my intuition is not correct!! It's going to be a loooooooooong May!!! (due May 30th)

  • With my first I was dilated 2 1/2 cms at 34 weeks.  The OB said she "hoped baby would stay in for a few more weeks.  Of course that got me thinking she'd be here early.

Nope, 10 days late and showed up 5 hours before I was scheduled to go in for an induction.

With my second, I told everyone that she'd be here sometime in May because my family has a history of late babies.  Still hoping that she'd be here around her due date, I was so disappointed when induction day came and she still hadn't arrived.

This time around, the date in my head is June 30th - 2 full weeks after her due date.  I've basically planned everything around that date - my maternity leave, family vacations, etc, and if she shows up early, it's just a bonus!

  • This advice I appreciate!!

Although, with me - it's family members trying to convince me LO is going to come early. Even DH - they think because she is my first & I'm small framed - she's surely to come early... I just let it go through one ear & out the other.

Why bother anticipating something one can't possibly know??? Usually I respond, she'll come when she comes, not a minute before or after.

  • I've been assuming I'll go on my DD or later, since statistically I believe that is what is most likely?

Also I'd rather not go early, ideally I want to go three days after my due date, on friday the 13th (after work). I've been telling the little one this often, and I hope she is listening :D

Or, you could be prepared for baby to come early knowing that it could happen... honestly, I'd rather be ready for baby by 37 weeks and be bored for three weeks than have nothing ready and have her arrive early.

I don't think anyone is saying not to be prepared with car seats or cribs, but instead not to convince yourself LO will be early only to have that let down and a long wait.
