S/O: how do you make good steak?

I've been craving steak for a few days now and yet I wont buy any cause I've never made it. My mother has always made it for me, yeah I know, sad. Any who, where do you start? What cut of meat do you buy.

HELP!

Re: S/O: how do you make good steak?

  • It really depends on what you like and how much love you're willing to put into it.  You can get a nice top sirloin fairly inexpensively, and put a rub or marinade on it, and it will be as tasty or better than a t-bone.

  • I splurge on steak night.  I buy the tenderest cut if possible.

Filet Minon or Tbone... a porterhouse is good too.

There are soo many ways to make, my fav:

    Grill

Season with Adobo (or just plain salt and pepper will do) - sorry my hispanic side came out.

And turn every 3 - 5 minutes until it suits your taste.  For an added zing, add a small sliver of butter for the last few minutes... ahhhh... heart attack happiness!

  • Also, are we cooking this on a stove/oven, or do you have a grill or foreman?

  • I like NY strip - tender and flavorful without being overly expensive.  I just rub with kosher salt and fresh ground pepper.

I get a cast iron skillet smoking hot - add a little butter and olive oil and throw the steaks in.  Get a good sear on both sides, then pot the skillet in the oven at 350 degrees to get to the preferred doneness.

    Easy and really, really good!

  • I really don't think you can get a bad cut, you just have to be conscious of how you cook it. Well done steaks are going to be tough. So I like nice thick ones. Get it to room temp and cook it at really high heat. And Montreal Seasoning, it rocks. Sprinkle some of that on it before you cook it.... yummm

  • are you grillling or oven cooking?

    I alwasy marinade with a

    1. Jack Daniels Marinade
    2. Beer
    3. Lee and Perry's, salt, pepper, seasoned meat tenderizer and stubb's BBQ spice.

Then throw it on the grill for a while or oven for a bit. I like to cook them longer on med heat to get them tender.

This is the best cut you can get. Tender/Juicy and wrapped with Bacon Just yummy.

  • There are some frozen steaks they sell at Walmart for 10-12 a box and I like them.  I always cook them on the grill, but use different marinades.

  • Also, are we cooking this on a stove/oven, or do you have a grill or foreman?

It'd be stove top or oven

  • Also, if you grill, let the meat "rest" for 5 minutes after you take it off.  I take mine off the grill and place them on a warm plate and cover them with foil.  I take the few minutes to put the veggies in the serving bowl or to get the plates on the table.  Allowing for the resting time lets the natural juices redistribute throughout the steak.
  • DH and I love Ribeye, it has a decent amout of fat/marbeling which makes it very flavorful.  You can broil it, pan fry, or my fav.-grill it.  Season to taste or marinate to taste ahead of time.  And cook to your desired doneness. I prefer medium rare.

It's really easy...I know that sound vauge...but really it's all about playing with your food

  • If you want a REALLY good steak, it is all about the GRADE if the meat, and BTW, Top is not a USDA grade. When I make great steaks, I buy a prime cut Ribeye. They go for about 16.99 per lb. The man at the meat counter cuts them for me. You can pick out a great steak off the shelf if you know what you are looking for. Marbling. Dig until you find the right one. The Choice cuts will be on the shelf.  If you start with the best meat, it is hard to mess it up. The worse the meat is, the harder it is to make it good. Prime steaks are hard to mess up.
  • Ok so I eat steak all the time, not that I am an expert or anything. Well I love the porterhouse cut b/c it is marbled with fat which gives great flavor yet is not grisly. So if you are using an oven broil the steak. Throw some steak seasoning on and broil about 3-4 min per side. If you like bleu cheese top your steak with that at the end it is sooooooooooooo good.
