question about IUI specimens

So, I just called the bank to order sperm, and our chosen donor only has IUI samples available right now.  Can you use IUI samples for home insemination?  Anyone know about this?   I mean, I know you can't do an IUI insemination at home, but will an IUI specimen work for a home ICI style insemination (I know that you can't use ICI samples for an IUI.)  Would love to hear from the experts!

Re: question about IUI specimens

  • From what I remember, IUI samples are washed and with that said, if you do an at home insemination which is only going to reach cervically (like ICI), I want to say that this could cause severe cramping...but that's about all I remember hearing from RE. I don't know if these would prevent you from getting pregnant just the same but I would definitely ask doctor before attempting. Sorry I couldn't be more help. I always use Google and of course, a Dr. Wink

  • Sorry, after further research, I realized I got it mixed up. You already know what I would say lol...that you can't use the ICI samples for IUI...

I did read one board where some women used IUI samples cervically and actually got pregnant. Like in your case, those were the only samples they were able to find.

  • I am pretty sure that you can use IUI samples for ICI.  In fact, our MFM requested we purchase IUI samples for IVF too.

  • Yes, you can. I believe the difference is that the IUIs are already washed thus making them suitable for IUI (can't use ICI  samples (unwashed) for IUIs.) Our RE had us buy ICI samples and then did the wash themselves.

  • my understanding is that you can use IUI samples (washed) for ICI, but can't use ICI samples (unwashed) for IUI.
  • Thanks, ladies!  This is all confirming what I thought, as well as what the bank representative said over the phone (those of you who said NW Cryobank was super-helpful--right on!  I was impressed!)  We placed our first order and are looking at trying for the first time mid-April.  So excited!

  • From what my MD said, the IUI samples only live 12-24 hours because they are washed (no nutrition left). For this reason, I think the sperm getting through the cervix and to the egg are considerably limited. Can you have a midwife perform an IUI? In Portland, some will even come to your house. It is a sterile procedure that feels like a pap smear. Just wouldn't want to waste money on samples if the chances of conceiving are so low.

  • Yep, just as pp said, IUI can be used for IVI/ICI but it's less harty after a wash and therefore doesn't live as long or have as much protection while getting through the cervix and to the egg. Also, I'll just through out there that some people do home IUIs, either with a midwife, or after some training. Best of luck!
