Natural Birth

Lets talk version

I have been seeing a chiro for the Wesbter technique. I had moxi done today which really wasn't bad, and I actually liked the smell. I have been doing lots of inversion.

If LO doesn't turn by next week my MW's will schedule a version. I am curious of the nitty gritty details and how your experience was. TIA.

Re: Lets talk version

  • The logistics:

36 weeks 4 days, complete breech

IV, a liter of fluids, NST, ultrasound for position and fluid level

IV terbutaline to relax the uterus (makes your heart race)

my OB and a resident bracing themselves on the bed and cranking on my belly, lol. Fetal monitoring the whole time, oxygen mask for a little when his heart rate dropped.

Monitoring for an hour after the procedure.

My experience: I would do it again in a heartbeat to avoid a c/s. It was a bit painful, but nothing I could not breathe through. My LO was stuck, stuck, stuck, so it was not a successful attempt, but the statistics that I have seen show at least a 60% success rate. Any specific questions?

  • My doctor successfully moved my transverse LO at 37 weeks. My dr hadn?t done a version in two years and my doula had never seen a successful one, so we were leery it would work. But, it did! It felt like forever while they were doing it but it apparently only was 1.5-3 minutes total. I was shocked when they told me how quick it was! I put my Bradley relaxation practice to use and did visualizations, deep breathing, and releasing all tension to get through the pain. (If you baby is breech, it may be longer as they have twice as far to push your baby around.)

After the version it took some time to get used to feeling LO in different places now. Every time he moved I was afraid he was turning back because he felt so different.  I was supposed to walk lots after the version so his head would get down in my pelvis and engage. I was very hyperactive for a few hours after b/c of the meds.

Before the version we tried several low-tech ways to get LO to flip: moxibustion, all of the spinningbabies.com tricks, doing hot and cold, music and light, going swimming and doing the flutterkick, doing handstands in the water, spending time in the inversion position, etc. We were planning on the Webster technique with a chiro if it didn't work. Also, if it didn't work, we planned to wait for labor to start rather than scheduling a c-section to give LO as much time as possible to turn (provided we were staying healthy) and let early contractions perhaps motivate him, etc. Transverse babies are in danger durging labor because of cord prolapse, so I would not have been allowed to labor long, but with a breech baby (if this is what you have) you may be able to labor for a good while and that labor might just motivate him  to flip. But, hopefully your version will be successful!

This You Tube video helped me feel prepared: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AM6wDwTjmc

After the version I had some cramping and sensitive spots from the drs hands, but overall I felt much more comfortable.

  • Be careful with a version.

Yes - they can be successful. Yes - if the baby turns (hopefully) no c-section. Yes - they can be painful.

Babies are often breech for a reason. Sometimes they have a cord wrapped around their neck and/or body and should not/will not turn.

With that info - good luck. Hopefully things go well!!

  • I wasn't a candidate for a version when my son flipped to breech at 37w and so I was scheduled for a c-section at 38w. I was really upset and did all the spinningbabies tricks without success. My friend, who is into natural remedies, told me to try putting peppermint essential oil on my belly. Apparently if you put it on the top part of your belly where the babies head is, they can smell it I guess and try to turn away from it (they are supposed to not like the smell).

I decided to give it a shot and put it on my belly one night before going to bed and in the morning he was head down again.

I try to mention it on here when I hear about breech babies because it wasn't info I really found out there when I was trying to find natural ways to turn our son last time and I was willing to try anything. I got the oil at a Vitamin Shoppe.

    Good luck either way!
