CD: Hemp vs. Bamboo inserts

I am beginning to believe that my child is a heavy wetter. I didn't think she peed that much, but the fact that her diapers keep leaking are making me think otherwise. I was told to try and tighten them up and it doesn't seem to help (plus now they are leaving red marks on her legs).

Anyway, I thought about getting some hemp or bamboo inserts to use as a doubler. But, I want to make sure they are thin (which I think they all are).

What kind do you recommend? Brand? Should I get bamboo or hemp?

What size will I need? She is currently 20lbs and we are on the second snap in most diapers.

Do you know of any great deals?

  • Oh man! :(

These are the doublers that we have and after they've been prepped we haven't had an issue: https://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=724

I hear bamboo absorbs faster, but since we are using the hemp as a doubler with a microfiber insert, I just went with them. They absorb about the same, just at different rates. :)

  • I went with the hemp ... I can't remember my reasoning now - sorry!  We have Thursties - and LOVE them.  Haven't had a leakage problem since.

  • I bought the Thirsties Hemp inserts. We double them up at night and never have leaks. We have a few bamboo inserts (not sure what brand) and they are wonderful too. I would say go with hemp first, the ones we have are definitely not thin and make his diaper very bulky.

  • From an eco-friendly perspective, go with hemp over bamboo.  The manufacturing process for bamboo is pretty far from eco-friendly.  I read a huge article on how un-friendly the process is to get bamboo from plant into fabric and the chemicals used.  I don't have it handy, but can find it if anyone is interested.

We went with hemp.  I also like the Cotton Babies Hemp Doublers.  DS has outgrown those, so we started using JoeyBunz inserts with a microfiber on top.

I'm now making my own hemp inserts/doublers because he needs them for nearly every diaper to last more than an hour.  I swear this kid is a faucet.

  • We got some Doopsy inserts from ebay, they're pretty affordable at less than $4/insert. They have just bamboo but I went with a hemp/bamboo mix.

I will also point out that we had some serious leaking issues until I switched detergents. (From Rockin' Green to Babee Greens) I didn't even consider that the detergent was making a difference, I only switched because someone gave me the Babee Greens and I figured I should use it. After two loads, we went from 2-3 outfit changes per day to maybe 2 per week. Something to consider.

Hmm, I am using Tide original. But, I am still currently doing my Jillian's Drawer trial so I have so many different types of diapers right now.

  • Oh, well if you've just started that's probably not it. It took several months for the detergent to get built up enough to cause leaking.
