Breastfeeding

fussy at night when bf

The last 3 nights LO gets fussy in the evening.  She cries nonstop.  When I try try to nurse she will latch on for a couple of minutes then come off and cry. Then latch on for a few seconds and then come off and cry.  We do this for 30-40 minutes at a time.  I finally cave a give her a bottle...i know I probably shouldn't but I don't know what else to do.  I've read that its normal for some babies to be more fussy at night and fuss at the breast, but that is does not mean you have low supply.  I'm afraid to give her a bottle because I know that by her eating it increases my supply, but how long am I supposed to just let her scream before giving her what she seems to want...milk.  I'm just so confused and frustrated and starting to feel like i'm failing at bf.

  • How old is your liitle one? For awhile DS would get fussy when nursing because he was super hungry and it's easier to use the bottle. You might want to try to feed her before she is too hungry. Also sometimes (can I get mom's hair) they get too  (is that the cat?)distracted  (what was that noise?) by every little (I wonder if it hurts when I scratch mom's eyes) thing that they (can I bite this off) really eat. I had to move to a quite room with as few distractions as possible for a week just to get DS to eat.

I think this mom thing is supposed to be a confusing, frustrating and wonderful time. I feel like I am failing half of the time. Then DS does something really sweet like crawl up into my lap and give me a kiss. I totally melt until he pulls my hair.

You will make it through this. It's tough but you will be just fine.

  • she is 5 weeks today and thank you.  I'm hoping this will pass.  I hate feeling like I'm not giving her what she needs.

  • When my LO was overly tired, he would fuss at the breast.  (well fuss at everything.)  Keep your chin up.

  •  DS does the same thing. We do supplement with formula, but usually at might when he's fussy and eating constantly, I just keep switching him back and forth on each side. He is definitely getting food, just being fussy. Our pedi said that evenings are fussy times for most babies.

In your case, I would not supplement with a bottle, just keep offering the breast. From everything I've read/heard, it ends around 3 months.

  • DD does this a lot, too. Sometimes I worry that she isn't getting anything and is just really fussy b/c of that - and is like, "No mom! I don't want the breast b/c there isn't anything coming out of it!" .... so I often just try try try and keep on nursing her despite the extreme fussiness, and then I'll offer her a bottle - to which she eats approximately .05% of it. So that is my clue that she isn't really hungry, and it's just her fussy period or she's tired.

  • It's definitely a phase.  We went through it at night too.  In the evenings, your flow is slower than in the mornings, so it doesn't come out as fast and that can be frustrating for babies because THEYWANTFOODNOW.  I guess they eventually get a little patience, because it does get better.
