Babies: 3 - 6 Months

3 1/2 month old to Hawaii?

My husbands's friend is getting married August 1st in Hawaii. We'd love to go, but are worried we'd spend all that money and have a horrible time. Our son will be 3 1/2 months old then. I'll be breast feeding, so we can't leave him. We live on then east coast, so the time change will be substantial. The plane ride will also be long. Advice please!

  • A lot of times 3.5 month LO's don't always have their day and night figured out yet.  Plus with that age they can sleep anywhere and anytime.  We took DS on a 7-day cruise last month at 5 months and he did wonderfully.  We had him in the ergo most of the time and tried to make it back to the stateroom for naps as much as possible.  I would vote to go.  But then again we thought nothing of taking our 2.5 y/o and 5 month old on a 7-day Disney cruise last month so I would be more open to doing things like that!

  • Honestly, its more the prep of taking everything than anything else. My LO is a little over 3 months and on no strict schedule. She can fall asleep in a stroller, car seat or on me. I am not saying it will be easy breezy at all but way better than taking a 1 year old :)  She mostly is easy but has bad days. So as long as you go with the flow and don't expect perfection, I would go.

Its hard without knowing what your baby is like. When do you have to decide?

  • I'd go!!!  We took DD to London at 6 months, Mexico at 9 months and then took both kids (19 months & 10 weeks) to Key West.  I got lucky and DS slept on the plane both ways.

I would just make sure you're prepared with the stuff you'll need - stroller, carrier, bottles/pump if for some reason breastfeeding isn't going as planned, blankets, bibs, etc.

  • The good thing about EBF is you can feed them on a plane, whenever needed. That makes it a lot easier. DS is almost 3.5 months and I'd probably hesitate to take him, but that's more of my personality and not wanting to spend the money on something that was going to be a slight PITA. It's probably going to depend on your baby's personality (some are more easy going than others), your personality (I'd say you have to have to be very laid back and not phased by much), and desire to go. The plane ride would probably be fine, you can hold them, play with them, feed them, and they'll sleep on you. You're more limited once you're in Hawaii-- we just got DS on a really good schedule, and he's in bed by 7 every night. I know you wouldn't have to do that, but honestly he'd be a mess if I just kept him up and out way later than normal. He wants to go to bed! And the wedding itself won't be amazingly fun IMO, since he'll be with you and it will limit dancing, socializing, drinking (if you drink), etc. I'll be the devil's advocate in these responses and say it's going to be hard.  But if you're up for a challenge, go for it.
