New- seeking a NB with OB

Hi! I just thought I'd introduce myself :) I'm April and I'll be having a baby girl (Scarlett Rose) in July.

I also wanted to ask what your best recommendations are for getting a natural birth in a hospital setting. DH and I are considering hiring a student Doula. I really want to but he's not so sure. He is the hesitant type who is pretty quiet so I feel that having a Doula there to back me up will be a good move, since it is our first baby and we really don't know what to expect.

    Welcome! The post below that's titled "Help me answer my husbsnds questions" has some incredible insight into doulas! I delivered Ds med free in a hospital, but didn't have a doula. I was blessed with a quick labor, so thankfully I was able to have a good birth experience! But next time, it's a no brainer- I'm getting a doula :) H&H next couple of months to you and GL!

    Get the doula. Well, meet with the one you're considering, and if you like her, book her. A doula was a great comfort to us.

    Labour at home. The odds of getting what you want if you show up at 8 cm vs. if you show up at 2 cm are pretty different. At home, you can eat, drink, move around, labour in any position, try the shower, try the bath, etc. 

    Talk to your doctor about what you want. Make a birth plan and take it to an appointment. If your doctor is against things that are important to you - or against birth plans entirely - you need to find a new caregiver. I delivered with a family doctor - and she was fine with me delivering on my hands and knees, delaying cord clamping, etc. She was really hands-off and patient. It was great.

    I'll be trying for a NB with my OB and we're not hiring a doula.  I considered it but since I also knew I wanted my mom there and MIL, a doula would just be one more person in the room.  I also know myself and know that having someone other than family there would make me more rigid and less able to relax.  Almost like I'd be putting on a performance, which seems silly and odd but that's just how I am.  If your DH is motivated to help support you in all the ways you need, then having a doula may not be needed.  Have him read "The Birth Partner." If he seems resistant to doing any self education on helping you, then I'd take that as a sign you should have someone else in there as a support person (doula, mom, sister) in addition to your DH, of course.

    I'm in the same situation, first baby and planning to have a NB in a hospital with an OB. When I asked my OB if she would work with a doula, she actually gave me the name and number of one that she recommended! I thought my husband may be a bit hesitant, but after our consult with the Doula he was on board.
