Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone losing their hair?

I'm almost 6 months pp and I have been losing so much hair over the past few months that it's really making me wonder if it's just hormones, breastfeeding or just my age :-).  I usually have a thick head of hair and now it is probably half of what is used to be.  Every morning, I am appalled by how much hair I pull out while running my fingers through my hair.  Is this normal and does it ever stop?

Re: Anyone losing their hair?

  • YUP!!! I swear I thought I was going to go bald. Went in for my annual pap with my midwife and asked her about it. She said that since we gain 50% more hair during pregnancy, we end up losing it between 4 and 9 months pp. Mine stated right at 6 months also. It has started to decrease and I am not quite losing as much at 8 months pp. She said that real PP alopecia (sp) is rare and although it seems like we are going bald, it is jsut a regeneration thing. Do you also have the little baby hairs growing? I have these little side burn things where the new hair is coming in. Looks great! ;)

  • Yes!  Mine started between 5-6 months and I was so scared.  It has definitely tapered off, though (DD will be 7 months next week).  But for about six weeks it was really bad, my shower drain and hair brush were so full of hair!  It should slow up over the next couple weeks.  I'm also breastfeeding so my horomones are still outta wack.  The hair loss should slow up.  I think you only need to get concerned if/when you are seeing your scalp and bald spots.

Speaking of hair, anyone else have super greasy hair PP?  I feel like I wash mine and it STILL looks dirty.  I think I'll actually start a diff thread on this, my hair (well, what remains of it!) needs help!

  • Mine ran from about 3-6m PP.  It's still coming out, but is MUCH better now.  It does end.  Hang in there.

Also, make sure to check your LO's diaper area and anything you put on his feet.  Hair can get stuck in there and cause issues.  I've forgotten the name of the "syndrome."  Hair tourniquet syndrome?
