Those of you with 18 month olds...come in

So my sweet dd is almost 18 months old and I'm a little concerned about her vocabulary/talking. She has some words and understands everything we say to her and ask her to do, but she does not have very many words. How many words does your DD/DS have and did you ever wonder they may have a hearing problem? I realize it could be nothing but thought it would be good to post it on here if someone else is going through the same thing. I know every child is different but at what point to you worry?

    For my DS he started talking a lot at 18 months.... in fact the day he was a year and a half he started talking like crazy. haha. We were worried a little bit but he understood what we were asking of him. I'm sure you lo will be talking up a storm very soon.

    When my DD2 was your LOs age she had very few words (mama, dada, no)  and didn't even use those very often.  I was slightly concerned because DD1 started talking at 10mo.  However once DD2 hit 25mo she started talking a ton and even using some two word phases from previously not talking at all.  My two daugthers have taught me each child is very different when it comes to milestones. You mentioned she seems to understand you and follow instructions and comprehension is a big part of vocab.  I wouldn't worry yet.

    Is your ticker wrong?  It says she's only 13 months.  At any rate, DS had a big language explosion about two weeks before he turned 18 months.  Before that, he didn't have many words at all.  Now he has a ton, and puts together 3 word phrases regularly.

    Charlotte went through a language explosion around 17 months. I think she had 25-30 words by 18 months, maybe more. If she understands what you're asking her, I don't think I'd worry about her hearing. Ask your pedi at her 18 month appointment if you're concerned. There's a wide range of normal at this age.

    Just.a.lurker:Thank you for noticing my ticker-It was off! I fixed it now. I am sure you were wondering-why on earth is she worried about her not talking when shes only 13 months old?! :)

    At 18 months, my DS had 1 word (go). I know there isn't anything wrong with his hearing because he responds when we tell him to do things and he understands everything we say. I think the reason my DS doesn't talk is because he doesn't have to. His sister responds for him and basically talks for him. Anytime I ask him a question, she answers. If I ask him to say something, she'll say it. If I ask him to tell me what he wants, he looks at his sister and she'll tell me.  So I try to work with him a lot when she's not around. He's now got like 6 words that he uses consistently and correctly. At this point, I'm not worried and neither is our pediatrician but if he doesn't get more words by the time he's 2, we're going to look into speech therapy.

    My DS is almost 20 months and hit his talking like crazy stage only at about 19.5 months... as long as she's understanding what you say, I would not worry.
