3rd Trimester

Oh the back pain

I can't sleep for more than 2 hours a night without waking up in agonizing discomfort from my lower back. Anyone in a similar boat find something that has alleviated the pain? I still have some growing to do and I know the pain is only going to get worse.

Re: Oh the back pain

  • Yes!!! The last few days its my back that has been keeping me up at night not my bladder or the baby! I sleep with a wedge under my belly and a pillow between my knees (or try to until I roll over!), and it doesn't seem to help.

Sometimes I dont sleep with a pillow under my head whcih oddly enough sometimes helps. But what helps one night, doesn't necessarily help the next.

For me its not only lower back (which is chronic for me) but more upper back and hips...

  • Last week I had extremely bad lower back pain as well, so I went to the dr.  I actually had the start of a UTI (without any other symptoms, weird I know.) so they put me on an anti-biotic and now I feel great! I thought the pain was from just being pregnant & all the growing and stretching but I was wrong.

Keep an eye on it and call your OB if it gets worse!

  • I have also been struggling with intense lower back pain during the day and while sleeping. I've tried stretches and back exercises, I sleep with a body pillow, one wedged between my legs and one behind my back but nothing seemed to help. The doctor asked me about it at my appointment this week and I told her it's not improving. She gave me a prescription for flexeril. I was a little weary of taking them but she assured me that it's ok and I got the BEST nights sleep last night that I've had in a couple of months.

I have my next appt this Wednesday and I'm going to mention it to my OB and see what she says. I really don't want to put up with the pain for another 13ish weeks...

  • I am in the same boat .. I am expecting twins and not even to my 3rd trimester yet and I am in sheer agony .. day and night!  I too sleep with a pillow between my knees and a blanket tucked under my belly and my upper half of my body slightly elevated. Helps sometimes .. not always!

On the nights when its awful and I really can't sleep I take two benedryl. My OB suggested this. Then I can get at least 4 hours of sleep ..

    Good luck!

  • I am in the same boat! I have really bad lower back pain. In my 20's I was obese. I was pushing almost 300 pounds! When I was at my heaviest my lower back hurt all the time, the only relief was to sit and let my back realigned. I lost the weight about 7 years ago and hadn't had an issue with it. Now that I am starting to gain weight (I've gained about 23 pounds and it seems to be all in the belly) The back pains are back, but it's usually when I am laying down.

Sleeping has been tough. Usually I start to sleep in my bed, but then get up in the middle of the night and move to the couch. The back of the couch is good support.

I have a friend who SWEARS that sleeping on a folded futon couch helped her a ton! Because the seat was slightly angled and the back was firm.
    Good luck!

  • I've moved to a recliner when I sleep and that's really helped out a ton! I have cronic low back and hip pain, and at times I can barely walk. I've gone to PT, had massages often and even swim, but nothing seems to be helping. Hang in there!
  • Have you tried prenatal yoga?  I feel like it really helps me--if I don't do it at least every other day, my back gets sore.  I just have a 30 minute dvd DH bought me.  I also swim laps and think that helps.  Do you have a pool you could use a couple days a week?  Just a few freestyle laps might help you get stretched out.
  • When I have pregnancy aches and pains I use a rice pack and it works wonders!  Basically you take a cotton tube sock and fill it with white rice.  Tie a knot at the top to keep it closed and place in the microwave for about 2 minutes.  I usually put one on my shoulders and one on my lower back when I fall asleep...works great!

I have also used Icy Hot Naturals which was approved by my OB and is a quick fix.  Good luck!

  • Since I started using a Snoogle for the past week and a half, my back pain has been much better. I also take a small pillow and place it under my belly/ boobs in the front. The Snoogle is around my back. I am surrounded by pillows.

  • I have back pain just from sitting in this office chair for 8 hours a day.  I also get it at night, too.  I have been using a heating pad on my back before I go to bed and it feels really good.

  • Bengay or Icy Hot or Tiger Balm (camphor and menthol only, not the kind w/ methyl salicylate), heating pad and tylenol PM (acetaminophen plus benadryl) at night to help get some sleep.
